GI appointment

Post by JLH »

I found her to be much less open to PP info than she previously was.

She said that Entocort can become systemic after months. She suggested Imuran and 6MP (I think that's it) but no 5 ASAs. She knows I have beening trying to go w/o Entocort or 5 ASAs, why would she suggest those?

I am going to try Welchol (I asked for Cholestyramine). No mention of interaction with Synthroid. I know there wasn't that info when I got it when I was first diagnosed. Not from CVS pharmacist or computer either.

I'll add Claritin RediTabs even though she didn't think my allergy test was an indication for it.

I'll see her in a month and I have a feeling I'll go on Entocort then. I need to research Uceris, is that the right name?

Uceris savings

WOW! This is hard to believe:"UCERIS is a new kind of treatment for ulcerative colitis. It specifically targets the colon and helps eliminate the symptoms of UC, with a safety profile similar to placebo (sugar pill)." Credit: Uceris.com

Maybe she checked out the site and discovered that we don't pat many GI docs on the back around here (or to phrase it more succinctly, we don't kiss many GI docs' butts on this board.).

IMO, skipping budesonide to go straight to Imuran or 6MP is sort of like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Yes, after about 6 months to a year, budesonide will have limited systemic effects. By contrast, Imuran and 6MP will begin to have major systemic effects much sooner than that. Mercaptopurine (6MP) is a chemotherapy drug used to treat some types of cancer. It fights cancer by preventing cells from making and repairing DNA. Like Imuran, it will lower your white cell count, so your white cell count will have to be monitored while you are taking it. If budesonide is so "dangerous" by comparison, why isn't it necessary to monitor a patient's white cell count when budesonide is used? Because budesonide is not nearly as dangerous to use, that's why.

The problem with drugs that work well for UC is that they target the wrong area for MC. UC always starts at the distal end of the colon (IOW proximal to the rectum), and if it spreads, it propagates backwards from there (back into the sigmoid colon). MC, by contrast, is most active in the terminal ileum (contrary to the training that most GI docs receive), and the ascending (right side) colon. IOW MC is mostly found at the opposite end of the colon, compared with UC.

Maybe the Welchol will provide relief, and you won't have to pick another treatment. :xfingers:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Oh, no, I'm certain she is way too busy to visit the PP site, just as she was over 5 years ago.

She didn't say budesonide was more dangerous at all. Sorry if I gave that impression. She just mentioned that it can become systemic when we were discussing it.

Probably not a good move, but I read her Polly's #9 from your book, What We Wish our GI Specialsits Knew About MC, about it needing it to be used longer than the literature suggests.

She wants me to get my life back. She was nice about disagreeing saying "Those are not my beliefs" or some thing like that. I said, "I know."

I've already had chemo and it could have been contributing factor in my MC. I had a burn from possibly not drinking enough water. It did harm my bladder for sure.........

my GI doc prescribed uceris for me, said its going to be more specific to the area inflammed in me. however, even after insurance coverage, the drug was still going to cost me $1200! a month! i think the pharmacist said it costs something like $4800 without insurance?? not sure if i misheard that in my state of shock, because it seems so unbelievable. but anyway, i called my doc and told him about the cost and he wrote a new script for entocort instead.
