Vitamins and nausea question
Hi all,
Does anyone else have a problem with any vitamins making them nauseated besides me, particularly the multivitamins?
This morning not too long (i thought) after my breakfast bar and colored water coffee with half a banana for breakfast, I decided I needed the "whole enchilada" vitamin as I'd felt very weak all day Friday, even BEFORE I had a flu shot. I really hadn't been eating but one good meal a day in recent days up until Thanksgiving, so up to that point, had attributed the weakness of that day to a deficit in nutrients up to that point, thus the multivit.
This particular multivit was a non-allergenic one that I'm pretty sure I've taken in the past, but with a bigger meal, and very close to it in time. Had no D with the nausea, btw.
I came up with the vitamin and a little of the liquid (Coca Cola) right away, and then, other than a little burning in my esophagus from the acid, I felt a little better.
Think I may have noticed a little burning after the capsule, but in the past, think ah've just thrown in some more food and been able to get rid of the nausea without throwing up. Do you suppose these capsules dissolve really fast?
When I first started supplementing, I found a liquid multi plus other stuff, that the vitamin store guy told me was safe for me to take. I don't think that tiny amount of soy with the vitamin E is a problem, btw. Never threw up with that, but it really required LOTS of food -- gagged on the stuff it was so bad, so eventually, had to cut way back on dose -- like half, and that seemed to do the job as I could wash it down really quickly with LOTS of water, etc.
What do you think it is about these quick acting multivits that is so irritating to the lining of the GI tract? Perhaps I should find one in a slower release form, but it would have to be free of my "allergens."
Maybe at this point, my tummy could break down the outer coating of one of those in pill form if I could find a major allergen-less one.
Even if one were in capsule form, if it were the slow-releasing variety, shouldn't that help? That might be the best of all worlds in that it would keep it all from flushing down the toilet, and being wasted in the main (Get it? Main? Hahaha! Oh well!)
Also, I think that if it were food poisoning, I wouldn't have gotten over it quite as fast. I'm pretty sure it was that vitamin capsule.
OK, this ever happen to anyone else?
I've been having some bruising in places where things hit doing patient care of Mom, so thought I might be low on something besides just the B-12, like vitamin K which could make me bruise a little easier if I'm not absorbing it.
Thanks for wading through all this.
Yours, Luce

I guess I'm lucky....don't faint if I tell you what I take all at once: 1 muti-vitamin, 2 Caltrate, 2 fish oil caps, 2 glucosamine/condroitan pills and a B complex. I forget to take them during the day, so take them with or after my evening meal. Sorry they make you ill, I'm lucky I guess....nite nite....JJ

Hi there,
Yes, all vitamins do that, it doesn't really matter what kind: but B vitamins are the worst. Since I know now that I react to sulfites, for me it may be the vit B1 and B7 (I think those are the ones) which are sulfites, especially B1 which is an extrememely concentrated sulfite. Yellow dye #5 is another, and the geletin caps that some vitamins come in are also (although I don't know how high the sulfite content is on those.) I had to stop taking synthroid and switch to levothyroxin because synthroid had yellow dye#5 in it, and the other doesn't. So even that small an amount, to color a pill light yellow, made a difference. The same thing happened with Wellbutrin: the starter half-dosage pills in the intro-pack are yellow, and the full dose pills that you take after are blue. When I took the smaller dosage yellow pills I had D, which went away when I took the larger dosage blue pills. Try and explain that and not look like a hypochondriac to your doctor!
See ya, Marsha

Well being the queen of nausea, just about everything gives me nausea, including vitamins. Before I was dx I would have nausea if i took them on an empty stomach or nearly empty. I started taking them with dinner. That helped tremendously. I've had the burning sensation too. I stopped taking them altogether now.
If you say you were feeling weak for a couple of days, maybe it's because you have a touch of a virus. That could also make your tummy upset.

Luce-
Vitamins nauseate me unless I take them after a full-sized meal (which is why I often forget!) The few times I have taken them on an empty stomach the nausea is almost crippling....
I take Freeda vitamins (allergen-free) and still have the same issue - it was worse with the prenatals - I think any multi has enough in it to trigger the nausea....

You know, I also take Caltrate: specifically because it has a buffering affect that helps my digestive tract not be irritated by whatever food is eaten at the same time. I should try taking a vitamin in the same swallow as the Caltrate, and see what happens. A person probably won't absorb as much of the vitamin as they would otherwise, but maybe it wouldn't be as irritating, either. I have tried taking vitamins on a full stomach, but that doesn't seem to help much.
