Lesley, I'm so sorry for your loss and your troubles. A fall like that is such a shock. You lose control of your body and feel vulnerable afterward.
Please consider trying Tai Chi. I did a face plant on the side walk and scared Hell out of myself and mu kids. I can no longer do yoga because of a spinal fusion and notice that my balance is slowly getting worse and worse. I bought a DVD teaching Tai Chi for arthritis and have begun slowly learning. I'm pretty bad at it but I do understand how it will help eventually.
Tex, thank you the recommendation for Metanx. I will ask my doctor about it.

To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.

Sheila, I have tried it and will again when I feel better. I do try to do yoga balance exercises, `but find it very hard right now. I think the balance is also a post polio issue, though it's difficult to prove it. Thank you so much!
Marlis and Martha - thank you for your warm support. It helps more than I can say.

Lesley, I'm so sorry about your sister, also about your fall. Seems like we really get rained on sometimes, doesn't it?
We really have to worry about falls as years go by. They sure don't make it easier as the years go by! Hope you are feeling better.

My mind is so peculiar. As I said, every time I am going down "arnica and ice" goes through my head.
But the other thought that flashed through, as I said, was colles' fracture, the wrist fracture caused to the small bones of the wrist by putting out one's hand to protect oneself. Since I was dx'd with osteoporosis I am so conscious of my falls.
I was horrified by that dx because I am one of those (rare) people for whom the phrase "heavy, big bones" is true. When I look anorexic I weigh 10-15 lbs more than other women of my height. I am 5'41/2", and when I am slim, but not anorectic I weigh around 145 lbs.
However, despite the dx, nothing broke (crossing fingers and spitting 3 times over my left shoulder). I HOPE the exercise I do is enough to keep my bones from leaching calcium.
The main reason I posted about my fall is to urge everyone to get some arnica and to keep it handy.
BTW - added value - it is claimed that arnica helps sore joints and bones too. I haven't had that experience yet, but I would try it way before any meds.

I am so sorry for your loss of your sister. And... you took quite a fall. I hope you are feeling better soon.
I have never heard of arnica either. That must be an over-the-counter med?

Wow Lesley, I'm late getting in on this conversation but I wanted to add my condolences for the loss of your sister. I'm sorry that your sister made the choices she did. It sounds like she left a wonderful family behind.
And talk about getting kicked when you are down! Your fall sounds scary. Thankfully nothing broken, but yikes! what a spill. No doubt you were preoccupied with your own thoughts and not concentrating on how you were moving. Certainly I've done that many times.
take care and know you have (obviously) many concerned friends here.

Lesley,
If you are interested in taking the over the counter equivalent of Metanx without the problematic inactive ingredients this is an easy way to do it:
Thorne Research Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate 33.8 mg 1 capsule
Pure Encapsulations Folate 1000 3 capsules
Thorne Research Methylcolbamin 2 capsules (1 mg each)
You can buy them all here:

Hey Jean,
Anything that would help my horrible balance - Even though it's all costing me fortunes. I keep forgetting to take supplements that I need probably because I am horrified at the costs. I need to make a comprehensive list of what I need and the costs. I just get overwhelmed the longer this goes on.
I looked for those supplements on the site you posted. They don't seem to have the last one.
I need to order everything and get it all sorted out. Most of these supplements are huge, like horse pills.
Thanks Jean!

They do have it although I seem to have spelled it wrong.

Lesley,
I am late to the conversation. I am so very sorry for the loss of your sister and for your terrible fall. I, too, lost my sister not long ago. She made poor life choices, but her loss to me, her son, and the rest of our family was immense. I hope that good memories of your sister will soon begin to replace today's difficult thoughts. I also wish well in healing after your fall.
