I don't understand why they think that they have made a great discovery. They say, "It will now use the protein as a basis for new diagnostic for Crohn’s and as a target in designing drugs to treat the illness." I can easily see how it might be used as a diagnostic tool, but is there any evidence that the protein is actually involved in the inflammatory process? Why would they think that a drug (supposedly to boost the level) would have a positive effect for treating Crohn's? This could turn out to be the "cholesterol" of Crohn's disease.
