HI Doug,
Gastritis was a huge part of the inflammation I had early on when I was in a major flare. If I had to find the exact point it would be tough but seemed to be toward the bottom of my breastbone. It would radiate to my back and sometimes upward under my ribs. Initially my doctor checked me for gall bladder problems but all those tests were negative. Treating the gastritis helped me get rid of both the nausea and GERD that signaled inflammation for me-- although it took almost 2 years to truly get it resolved.
I often kept a roll of Tums on my nightstand because it seemed like it would come on in the evening even while I was on meds. A couple of Tums would curb it enough I could ignore it and sleep.
Hope this helps some. The way pain can radiate through the chest and back it's sometimes hard to find where it started.
Good luck,
Carol

Carol's experience is very similar to mine. At night, in bed, intense pain mid-chest relieved by Tums. Gallbladder wasn't an issue and Doc said it was gastritis, probably brought on my use of Celebrex. Sometimes gas pains can be very intense as well.

Hi Doug,
It does sound reminiscent of my early days of GERD, before the acid was just washing into my throat all the time. I'm better now than in ten years since I've eliminated gluten and other foods. Just to tell you that there is hope.
The angled pillow at night really helps me too.
If you discover it is GERD, I can only say that, try to treat it with dgl or enzymes, eating more than three hours before bed, or avoiding food triggers. The medicines (PPIs and H2 blockers) are indicated in causing MC. They made mine worse, I am convinced of this.
Best wishes,
Nancy

Also, never ever sleep on your right side, as that places the upper part of your stomach higher than your lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and if the LES relaxes (which is what happens when acid reflux occurs) then gastric acid will leak back into the esophagus while you sleep, burning the esophageal mucosal tissue and causing increased mucus (phlegm) production.
