Chicken Pox!

My husband has Chicken Pox! He already had it as a child. What are the odds? I guess I will find out if my body built up enough antibodies to not get it also ( being deficient in certain antibodies scares me a bit)... and we'll find out if my daughters vaccine has worked :) Wish us luck. it's a two week incubation period.

Sorry to hear about your husband having Chicken Pox. I can understand your concern, and I am wishing you "good luck" to make it through this without any issues.

Leah I have heard of that happening but not often.

My husband had them at the age of 38, after our then 4 year old daughter had them. He had never had them before and our docs were quick to prescribe an anti-viral drug for him as soon as we saw the first pox. Still it was a miserable several days but we did manage to keep him out of the hospital, although he laid in bed and shook like a malaria victim from a 1940s black and white adventure movie.

I hope your husband's case is more mild and you avoid having another case of them too.

Thanks everyone. He went in yesterday and got the antiviral, but woke up today with his hands and feet on fire. It almost seems like a combination of chicken Pox and shingles because now his nerve endings are involved. YIKES!

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that, Leah. Chicken pox is an odd illness. I was the third out of my two brothers and me to get it (though we all had it within about a month of each other), and I was already 16 at the time. Meanwhile, my father, who never had chicken pox as a child, still didn't get it despite three very sick kids living under the same roof. So you just never know who, when and how it will strike.

Good luck to you. I really hope you don't get it.

I hope that your husband recovers quickly and you and your family are not infected. When my kids had the chicken pox, my daughter got it after my son had it and it was so much worse for her. I cried with her.

I have been urging my husband to get the shingles vaccine as he is over 60. He is a very bad patient and I don't want to go through that with him.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Shingles are horrible. My father has permanent nerve damage in his arm. The constant pain has ruined his life and has made him an oxy addict :(

Yikes Leah, I hope you can avoid it. I'm still on the fence about the value of the vaccine in kids. Some sources say the high rates of shingles are due to recently vaccinated kids shedding the live virus around their grandparents and people in the community. Of course shingles is supposed to be a reactivation of a live virus that lives dormant in us after our first bout of chicken pox, so why would new exposures matter?

Could your hubby be IgA deficient too? I'm kidding, but I wonder what factors would lead someone to have chicken pox twice?

Sure hope you avoid it Leah. Having had shingles I can say it is definitely the worst pain I ever experienced and still have off and on pain at times after a year and a half. Also had chicken pox two times as a child - ages 5 and 14.

FYI, you can definitely get shingles more than once. Even if you have had shingles, get the vaccine if possible. Many of us have immune system issues and are vulnerable to reinfection.

I just e-mailed my Endocrinologist to ask him if I would even build the antibodies if I did get the shingles vaccine. Thanks all, Mike is not feeling so great right now. it's all over his arms, legs, hands and feet. Poor guy

Leah - so sorry to hear about your husband - poor guy. My son had shingles a couple of years ago, and it was pretty tough on him. Hope you and the rest of your family manage to stay healthy, and your husband gets back to normal soon
