B-12 Testing Question

Post by terre »

[If you suspect you have B12 deficiency: The first step is to get a holo-TC and/or urinary MMA test. If either of them are abnormal, you should immediately take steps to increase your B12 levels.]

I was reading up on B-12 and ran across the above....I know Tex said to do the 25(OH)D test....should I also consider one of the above?

Thanks,
Terre

That a test for vitamin D.

Regarding a vitamin B-12 test — I let my doctor worry about the details of testing B-12 — that's his job. He's going to do it the way he wants, anyway. If we try to micromanage everything our doctor does, not only will he or she resent that, but we will soon be searching for a "new" doctor.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Oops Tex, my fault....I was confused B12 vs D3....and you are right, I sure don't want my doc resenting me or having to find a new doc.....happy with the one I've got.

Hi Terre,

A few years ago my internist ordered a simple blood test that showed that my b-12 was low. I used sublingual b12 for a year and resolved the problem. B12 deficiency is pretty rare. I had surgery many years ago that makes it hard to absorb b12, so we keep an eye on it.

Are you having symptoms? Luckily, it is pretty easy to resolve.

Warmly,
Lori

I really don't think b-12 deficiency is very rare in those of us with Celiac and other IBDs. Mine was at low normal at 376. Normal is 200-1100. Doctor says some patients can have issues at levels less than 400 and since mine are less, am having some symptoms and have Celiac and MC she advised me to up my b-12 by taking a sublinqual one at 500mcg. My bloodwork was done in February and I honestly think levels have gone down even further.

They say the best source of B-12 is meat, eggs and dairy. The only one of those I've had to give up is dairy and that concerns me as well...so will probably be on B-12 for some time. We need to keep our levels over 400 for sure....just fyi!

Terre...yep, your doctor will know how to test for the b-12...you may have to ask though! Unfortunately they don't normally do it in a routine physical.

Hope your levels are okay.....my Vitamin D was at 81!
