Hair Loss

Post by christinakay »

Does hair loss coincide with MC? My hair is thinning. My thyroid has been tested and the results are fine.
TSH 2.86, Free T4 1.29, Free T3 2.58. What else could be causing my hair loss. I am tapering down on entocort.
Currently taking 3mg for 3 days then off for 1 day. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Christina

I think a side effect from Entocort. One of the reasons I tried so hard not to go on it.

I've never taken Entocort and I have thinning hair, too. I thought maybe it was a menopause side effect, or shock after my husband's near-fatal motorcycle accident seven years ago. Now I think it's from long-term gluten exposure before I was diagnosed with CC (two years ago) and possibly an ongoing side effect of the disease.

Hi Christina,

As Pat mentioned, the malabsorption issues that are associated with MC probably contribute to such problems (the "B" vitamins are especially at risk), and as Joan pointed out, most of the anti-inflammatory medications used to treat the disease are notorious for being associated with hair loss.

Asacol is probably one of the worst, and many members here have complained of that problem while using it. I don't recall offhand if hair loss is officially listed as a side effect of Entocort, but thinning of the skin and easy bruising are listed, and that in itself is enough to promote hair loss.

I have thin hair to begin with and it has steadily become worse. I am figuring out thyroid issues so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it along with malabsorption issues. I've stopped highlighting my hair because I'm afraid of the added stress to it. It's no fun to look in he mirror to see my scalp through my thinning blah hair. I shouldn't be so superficial but its just an added kick in the ass when everything seems so depressing at times.

Deb and Joan,

I agree totally. My hair at one time was very thick and now it is so thin (at least in my estimation).
Not fun!

I have had thinning hair for the last few years also; I attributed it to not absorbing the proper nutrients in my food =(

It is expensive, but I have used the phyto phytocyane revitalizing treatment and swear it has helped. But, it is still just a topical treatment, & ultimately the best solution would be making sure your digestion is as good as possible to try and absorb the nutrients...

Learn somehing new here everyday. My hair is really thick and have not lost any of it. But my bottom eyelashes have been falling out for the last five years. Never dawned on me it is probably related to this LC. They slowly grow back - guess I should be thankful for what I have.

When my antidepressant caused my hair to thin, my doctor told me to take Selenium, 2X200mcg. It did help me.

Thanks, Brenda. Will try that.

There is a Joan Rivers product called Great Hair Day that can help hide bare scalp. They have it on QVC but Google for best price. The gray is called salt and pepper but it is too pepper for me so I add a little baby powder. Why they don't have light gray is a mystery since we are probably the population that most needs it.

Manufacturers of so many products don't seem to have a clue. This situation reminds me of all the anti-inflammatory medications that are sold to reduce intestinal inflammation. We know (and obviously they don't) that most of the time (when it isn't caused by drugs), the inflammation is caused by reactions to certain foods, and yet so many of those medications contain ingredients derived from the very foods that typically cause the inflammation. Duh! And the doctors who prescribe them and who of all people should know better, are just as clueless. Double Duh!!

Another Thing

Entocort studies population/subjects!

"The safety of Entocort EC was evaluated in 651 patients in five short-term, active disease state studies. They ranged in age from 17 to 74 (mean 35), 40% were male and 97% were white, 2.6% were greater than or equal to 65 years of age."

I can't find what I originally read.

First, a disclaimer: I think I come at this from a slightly different perspective than most. Officially, I have LC. But I don't fit the typical LC symptoms, never been on budesonide, and LC doesn't explain all my symptoms. so, while I have a diagnosis, I'm really an atypical eclectic collection of symptoms that have me following a very limited diet.

with that said, I was losing body hair in a weird way, in a weird place .... on my legs, and wrists. I took a "string test" for Hcl, and it showed I had no HCl in my stomach. Now, it's not a 100% specific test, so I may have some HCl. But, i started on betaine HCl anyway. 3.5 months later, my hair has made a significant comeback. Body hair, that is. I do have thinning hair on my head, and am hoping that it also makes something of a comeback (but I don't know why it would lag my body hair).

So, for me, loss of body hair was a mal-digestion problem. perhaps this might help others, so I thought I'd mention it.
