tech question

Post by artteacher »

This is probably for you, Wayne,

Sometimes when I'm browsing the site I'm listed as a browser (at the top of the page) and sometimes I'm not. I'm always logged in. Do you know why that is?

If you are saying that the messages in a given location change arbitrarily, that's a new one on me. If it's happening, it may have something to do with your browser, and the way it handles cookies. All navigation and information presentation is controlled by cookies, with php programming.

I use Mozilla, and when I'm logged in, those lines at the upper left of the index page read:

Thanks for logging in tex
You last visited on 02 Dec 2005 10:08 am
The time now is 02 Dec 2005 11:10 am

Otherwise, if I'm not logged in, it reads:

Welcome Guest
The time now is 02 Dec 2005 11:10 am

I don't recall the word "browser" even being listed as an option, in that part of the code. Anonymous visitors are usually referred to as "guests", whenever the program addresses them.

Different messages are displayed on different pages. For example, at the top of this page, (Main Message Board), it says:

Users browsing this forum: tex Is that the message you're referring to?

Or, are you referring to a message in some other location on the board?

Curious,
Wayne

P S There's one other possibility. After 5 minutes in a given location, you are timed out, and will no longer be counted among the visitors on that page. The timer refreshes every 5 minutes, (I can set it to any interval, but 5 minutes is the customary selection). IOW, new visitors are counted every five minutes, and they are then displayed in the "browsing this forum" message. If you leave and then return, you should be counted again as a "browser".

Hi there,
I hope you're well today. Rested up from doing laps at WalMart?

The line I'm talking about is "browsers using this forum".

Sorry for not being more specific.

You probably posted before I finished revising my post to include that line. If so, please re-read it, as I added a bunch of stuff to cover other possibilities, but you beat me to the finish line.
