D3 and B12

Post by terre »

I had my gyno visit today and asked my doc if she would mind ordering the 25 hydroxy D and B12 tests. She was more than happy to and said that as we get older that D3 is often low and if that is my case that she would have me on higher IU and recheck in 6 mo.

I took a health report in with me stating: "People ages 50 and older may be less able to absorb B12" and listed the side effects of being deficient. It went on to say, "other supplements you should discuss are Vitamin D and calcium".

I was so happy that she was open to ordering the tests....insurance may not pay, but I think the information will be worth the cost.

Good for your doctor. It's sad that insurance companies have somehow wormed their way into the position where they often manage to cast the deciding vote about tests and treatments, despite the fact that they know absolutely nothing about medicine and health. That's a scary fact of life in health care these days.

The last time I had my D3 level checked, my insurance paid for it. Let's hope they pay this time. I'll either have the blood drawn later this week or next.

I would suggest your get your D levels check asap. If you are under the new Obamacare, it won't be covered. It's considered unnecessary.

Hi Terre,

I will check the insurance aspect for you. I work for a medical provider and we accept, Medicare, Medicaid, and all the new health panels set up with the new health initiative. We do not do blood work but, I meet with medical billers regularly and they have not seen that anyone's blood work that included vitamin levels testing be denied. We meet to keep up with the new changes. I will ask specifically about D3, which is typically included in the panel.

My d3 and b12 testing was paid for by BCBS. I hope this helps. I wish they would pay for Enterolab testing, but they say no. I will submit it anyway.....sometimes they surprise me.

Warmly,
Lori

Thanks for checking Lori.....they told me that they had no way of knowing if insurance would pay and I had to sign a waiver that I would pay if insurance didn't. I also have BCBS so maybe I'll get a nice surprise when I see it covered. I'm just glad that she agreed to have the labs ran, my next option was going to be what Tex does to get his D3 checked.

BTW, Tex you are right about the amount of blood they draw for testing compared to what they need when you order it by mail. I watched the video on how to send it in and I think I would have no problem with a little prick and getting the blood on the card to return to them (it's such a small amount). I didn't not explore the cost of doing it that way, but if Mandy is correct about Obamacare not covering when it goes into effect, then I will be doing it by mail in the future.
