Waiting on Entero Lab & Fatigue on Elimination Diet

Post by seeljanerun »

Hey all,

On the Enterolab website it states that they received my test yesterday, so I am anxiously waiting to hear the results.

I know it says that it takes around 3 weeks for them to send out the results, but has anyone heard from them earlier?

Also, in the meantime, I started an elimination diet on monday just to jump start things. I have been eating chicken, turkey, banana, canned pumpkin & sweet potato with no additives, coconut oil, ghee, applesauce (no additives) & coffee (fingers crossed that I'm not sensitive to chicken or sweet potato but who knows).

However, despite eating large meals and drinking coffee in the AM & afternoon, I have been very tired. It's not that I wasn't fatigued before, but I feel like even after drinking my coffee I could go right back to sleep; if I didn't have the coffee, I don't know if I'd be able to leave my apartment at all. I am getting 8-9 hours at night, so it's not an overall lack of sleep that's causing it.

Anybody else experience this? I don't think it is from a lack of calories because I eat whenever I'm hungry... (coffee in AM with coconut oil & ghee in it, large serving of meat plus banana & pumpkin/sweet potato for lunch, a 2nd serving of lunch in the mid afternoon if i get hungry again, plus coffee w/ coconut oil, and then a similar large meal for dinner with some apple sauce too) ...but maybe I'm wrong.

So far, no progress on the potty front...

Hi Jane-
Just a note on Enterolab because I was wondering the same thing...They received my test August 13 and I am still anxiously waiting. It's been 2 weeks. I ordered test A, C and the fat malabsorption test.

I did Panel B in mid-July, and it took exactly two weeks to get my results.

Jane,

Good idea to get started on the elimination diet, of course you will know more when you get your enterolab results. It may take more than several days for you to respond to diet changes.
I noticed several foods may be presenting a problem in your diet:
Coffee is a irritant and when in an active flare it may be perpetuating your symptoms. It is possible when things calm down you can work it back into your diet.
Ghee is not always casein free, and if you need to avoid casein there may be enough there to cause a problem. There was a discussion several weeks ago on this forum regarding a brand to avoid and another one that was safe.
Fatigue is common when in a flare and early stages of recovery.

Hi Jane. It took three weeks for me to get my results. I hope you get yours soon.
The fatigue is probably because you are pooping your brains out!..... and not absorbing nutrients.
I agree with Donna about the coffee. I can't touch coffee or tea even after almost two years. Ghee is definitely dairy and I don't think I'd be eating that either right now.

It does take a while for the diet to kick in so try to be patient. This disease demands it.
Take Care

On the other hand, I can have both coffee and green tea. I can't have chicken however. In the final analysis we each have to test things out for ourselves. My enterolab results came in 2 weeks.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! I guess best case scenario is 2 weeks, worst is 3. Robin, hopefully you will hear from them soon!

Coffee is one of those things that I have eliminated in the past to no effect, but then again, I was still eating soy, casein, corn, eggs, etc.

I'm clinging to it now because idk how else i'd function!

The ghee is the organic india brand - grass-fed, gluten free and casein free according to their website; I guess contamination is possible, but that's a risk with all food.. I'm not using a lot of it, but sticking with the coconut oil would be an easy switch. Might as well try it.

The thing about the tiredness though is that I haven't had a norman in years, gone to the bathroom up to 20 times, and I didn't feel this wiped. Today I'm around 5x.

I guess you're right Leah, patience is the real key here - stick it out until I have the results, and then go from there.. :mail:

Jane,
From the tiredness issue, I would bet you have adrenal fatigue. Coffee, unfortunately, doesn't help the issue, because as a stimulant it stresses cortisol production, which then taxes the adrenals. A vicious cycle.

You can check to see if you have adrenal fatigue; through blood work, from a simple eye test, a blood pressure test, even a finger nail scratch test.

If you don't address the adrenal fatigue, it will compromise your thyroid levels.

There are adrenal supplements out there (Gaia adrenal support) which will help to boost your adrenals.

Please check it out. Stop the Thyroid Madness has info on the tests; also just google adrenal fatigue tests and you will find instructions.

I, for one, would try to take adrenal support and wean myself off of coffee.

Many blessings

Hello Jane,

I, too, am anxiously awaiting my Enterolab results.

I think my extreme fatigue was from giving up refined sugar (may have had some if it was hidden in a product)....in addition to having the typical MC fatigue....I was soooooo tired and even felt like I had the beginning symptoms of the flu. It was horrible and I almost gave up....but now I think I have gotten over that and back to the regular fatigue of MC. (I am still very tempted when I pass the candy aisle and we've had two sets of company that I had to bake a dessert for....very hard.)

Oh and the brain fog was really, really bad, I felt like I couldn't think straight!

I wish you well and hope you see improvement soon,

Mandy,

Thank you for the tip about the adrenal fatigue; it is very possible. I lost my mother on my birthday this year in may to cancer and then got married the next month (alot of time and money went in to planning it, so we couldn't really reschedule it); while one of those events was very happy, both were stressful in their own right. I also excercise 5x a week, 2 days more low-key running, but 3 days weightlifting/crossfit style work outs. It is quite possible that it is my body saying, "too much!!"

But, the onset of the extreme fatigue coinciding with the dietary changes makes me wonder if it is not something about the diet.

Terre, thank you for sharing your experience. I think it might be possible that, yes, I got an energy-buzz so to speak from some refined starches in my diet; I am even more suspicious of this withdrawel effect, as I had a GIANT cupcake last weekend to say goodbye to gluten and sugar  certainly not the best idea I ever had.

Terre, I have the brain fog too; it is hard to remember groceries, peoples names, etc. and I can't concentrate on any one thing for long. I end up watching mindless TV shows when I'm home instead of doing something productive because I can't concentrate. If I am going to be honest though, this may have been going on for awhile...probably should have my adrenals checked just in case!

I will keep my fingers crossed that enterolab hurries up and gets us our results soon =) I know I can stick to this diet, but it would be a lot easier if I had some concrete proof of why I personally should be avoiding certain foods

Oh my goodness, Jane, with all you've experienced in the last few months, it's no wonder you're having a difficult time and to think you exercise that much....wow!

My condolences in the loss of your mother.....and congratulations on your marriage. Could you be suffering from a bout of depression? Your plate has been full (and overflowing).........be gentle with yourself.

Warm wishes,
Terre

Thank you Terre & Robin; she was sick for a long time, so I knew it was coming eventually, but still a great loss.

I do really miss her and I'm sure I'm depressed somewhat; I'm not sure how much this plays a role in my fatigue.

Robin, exciting news!! Are they what you suspected?

Jane-
I think being depressed could play a very large part of your fatigue. Stress does extreme things to our bodies and sometimes we don't even realize what the source is. Also though, just simply the fatigue of MC can be very bad. I was more tired in my life in the few months before I was diagnosed. I didn't know what was going on, all I knew was I wanted to get back in bed everyday after I put my kids on the bus!

Take care and be patient with yourself. Grief is tough and a long process. I lost my husband suddenly in an accident, totally different than losing your mom, but both deep losses that take a toll on the body. It seems lots of people on this board have had life altering experiences that may have played a part in the onset of their MC.
