Finally REAL research shows gluten treats some IBS-D

Post by tnelson »

I found it so refreshing and important that controlled research is being done. Pardon if others already knew about this. I believe Medscape requires a password but is free.

Finally they are starting to know that IBS is gluten-related in cases of HLA-DQ2/8:

(Of course, IBS-D is probably often microscopic colitis in disguise.)

An article on new guidelines on Celiac: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/809 ... 32842_1521
Quote from the very end of the article:
"There was a very interesting article in Gastroenterology [2] that looked at the patients who were HLA-DQ2/8 positive and showed that irritable bowel patients responded to a gluten-free diet. A variety of patients, not just those with celiac disease, might respond to a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free foods are a $6 billion industry right now."

And here is the article he was referring to:

Vazquez-Roque MI, Camilleri M, Smyrk T, et al. A controlled trial of gluten-free diet in patients with irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea: effects on bowel frequency and intestinal function. Gastroenterology. 2013;144:903-911. Abstract CONCLUSIONS: Gluten alters bowel barrier functions in patients with IBS-D, particularly in HLA-DQ2/8-positive patients. These findings reveal a reversible mechanism for the disorder. Clinical trials.govNCT01094041. http://www.medscape.com/medline/abstract/23357715

Thanks for the links,

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
