DOctor screw up?

Post by Lesley »

Talking to a neighbor yesterday she told me that her hubby had had a painful cough for 4 years and had gone from one doc to another. They had treated him for anything and everything, meds up the wazoo, and eventually referred him to a GI, who did numerous tests and dx'd him with - wait for it - acid reflux! He prescribed pantoprazole, and a after a week of taking it the cough has gone.
The GI told him that there would be no side effects. I cringed when I heard that. As a sufferer from the side effects of long term PPIs, and as someone who cannot get rid of them, my heart sank. As many times as I have had docs tell me the same nonsense, and seeing people around me suffer I still cannot believe it when I hear something so irresponsible!

OK, he has been on it for a month. Question is - how should he get off it and keep the GERD at bay? I told her about D3, and will tell her about ranitidine.
Many more ideas? I am sure there are!

I got rid of severe gerd by eating a low carb paleo diet. It takes a bit of commitment.

Leslie,

Jean is right on target. Read what Dr. Eades (one of Dr. Loren Cordain's friends and colleagues) has to say on the subject:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

He won't do that. He needs to lose weight, as does his wife. They are orthodox Jews, and will not give up their Shabat challah, or any of their foods.

I eat low carb and paleo for the most part, but have been eating some potatoes and oats since I don't react to those.
I cannot get rid of my GERD any more than I can get my MC under control. According to enterolab those are 2 of the very few foods to which I don't react. Could those foods be holding me up?

Given that he is not going to stop with the carbs etc., what do I tell him about kicking the PPIs? Cut it down while taking ranitidine and vit D3 sublingually? Or in liquid form (which is what seems to help me more)?
