16 days on Pepto and have a question
I think I jinxed myself....I just posted (I think yesterday) that I was feeling better on Pepto. Beginning tonight, ringing in ear began - please tell me I don't have to trash the whole Pepto treatment plan. Can I just reduce the dose and continue on?
Also, I'm leaving for vacation on Saturday and would really like to feel as normal as possible while away. Any input would be appreciated.
BTW, what causes the ringing?
Thanks,
Terre

Hi Terre,
You can try reducing the dose, but that's like eating a little less poison, as far as your hearing is concerned. I would be surprised if a reduced dose would completely stop the problem, and the risk is that if you allow it to continue too long, it might become permanent, and that would be a bummer.
It's not just bismuth subsalicylate that causes the problem — all salicylates are known to be a risk for tinnitus, including Ibuprofen, Motrin, and other NSAIDs. But I'm not aware that anyone actually understands the mechanism by which the damage is done.

Be sure you take an adequate supply of Imodium along (the original version, so that it's free of allergens).Terre wrote:Any input would be appreciated.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex, thank you for replying.
The ringing has subsided this morning, but I did not take my night time dose of Pepto.
I have always been sensitive to medications.....so I guess it is no surprise that I'm having this side effect.
I am going to reduce the dosage of Pepto and stop completely if necessary and I will purchase the Imodium (good to know which one to purchase)....just to get me through our vacation. I should be getting the Enterolab results any day and hopefully that will give me some guidance.
Thank you so very much,
Terre

Well, wouldn't you know it, I just had the most normal BM since March.....and to think I may have to stop the Pepto!
BM wasn't fully formed, but lo and behold, there were a couple of promising examples of what a visit from "Norman" would be like.
Tex, you hit the nail on the head when you said it would probably take a couple of weeks on Pepto before I saw any results. Oh, how I don't want to give this up!!!!!!
I could never have imagined I would ever be this excited about "Norman"! Now, I've got some thinking to do about what I'm willing to risk to have a relationship with him!!!!! I pray that just reducing the dose will give a little relief on both ends.....ringing ear and rear end!

Terre, congratulations! It's so encouraging when there is a little glimpse of hope. I tried pepto and all I got was black D. Glad it's working for you.

Terre,
I hope your progress continues.
It's amazing how this disease rearranges our priorities in life, isn't it. And even more incredible is the way that it inspires a sense of happiness, satisfaction, and pride, where those emotions didn't exist before — in the bathroom.

Haha, I've had to resist the urge to drag my husband into the bathroom to show him my accomplishments.

Terre, reducing the dose, as Tex said, may not be enough to stop the tinnitus. My ears didn't start ringing until six weeks into the protocol, but once they did, it was pretty bad right away. I cut the dose in half, and it seemed to help for a few days, but I ended up discontinuing it entirely a week later when the ringing came back even worse than it had been before. It's as if the longer I kept taking the Pepto, regardless of the dose, the more it built up in my system, and I reached a tipping point for some pretty ugly side effects (nighttime sweating and dizziness in addition to the tinnitus). I've been off the Pepto for 10 days, and the tinnitus is just now starting to improve. I can only hope that it'll go away completely.
Honestly, if I could do it over, I wouldn't take the Pepto. I went into it fully understanding the risks but overestimating my ability to "tough it out." I'm a little too old for the "Oh, that won't happen to me" approach to risk-taking, and yet that's exactly what I did, meaning I was sure I could either avoid the side effects or figure out how to handle them if they did show up. Yes, the diarrhea is 100% gone, and my digestion is now better than probably at any other time in my life, which is a hard result to argue with. But this could be due just as much to being GF and DF, avoiding raw fruits and vegetables, etc. We're all different, of course, but if a friend asked me if I'd recommend the Pepto protocol, my answer would be an unequivocal "no."
This is just my experience. I know others here have had no problems at all with the Pepto, and I thought I was going to be one of those people since I didn't experience any side effects for the first six weeks. I was wrong.
Take care,
Fiona

Fiona, I was hoping you would reply. I've been wondering how you've been since stopping the Pepto.
Did you take the Entocort at all....or just diet? At this point, I really just want to hang on till 9/14 (when we get back from vacation). I don't want to be looking for restrooms and feeling miserable the whole time. I'm cutting back to 6 to see how I feel.
Thanks,
Terre

No, I didn't take Entocort at all. In fact, it was my desire to avoid Entocort that led me to the Pepto. Be aware, though, that I have a much less severe case of MC than many folks here do; I don't even have an official diagnosis, only a colonoscopy biopsy report that "suggests" MC. I certainly would've tried Entocort if I were desperate for relief.
