FODMAP malabsorption masquerading as non-celiac GS?

Post by Zizzle »

This seems like a radical suggestion, that gluten sensitivity is actually FODMAP malabsorption.

Amy Burkhart, MD, RD ("The Celiac MD") explains the surprising new research.

I don't think I buy it, although I did test moderately reactive to apples, onions and garlic on MRT (and I still eat them...without obvious reactions)
The study looked at 37 people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity and IBS. Celiac disease had been ruled out as a cause of symptoms. When all 37 people were taken off of food that contained FODMAPS, they improved significantly. When they reintroduced only gluten and not the other FODMAP foods, only 8% of the 37 people with “Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity” actually reacted to gluten.

Hi Zizzle,

When it was first suggested by my general doctor that I had IBS, I tried the FODMAP diet (bought a book, and did the whole 9 yards). It did not get better (and a bit worse), so I gave up. I had to see the GI who did the colonoscopy and diagnosed LC.

I agree with you, and I am not buying it.

Warmly,
Lori

I wish it were that simple of an explanation for those of us with MC. Do we really want another list of foods to eliminate from our diet? However, I have to say I have looked at the FODMAPS as an additive factor to my symptoms when I am experiencing a flare, but I do not think they cause a flare.

I think it is two different things. My cousin is following a FODMAP elimination diet because of "IBS" symptoms and it has completely gotten rid of her symptoms. When she was first having issues, I suggested Enterolab and she did do test A and nothing showed up. I also think you can have both MC AND malabsorption problems. I know for a fact that I have issues with fructose and sorbitol. Some of us here would probably be feeling better if they followed a low FODMAP diet also...especially if they suffer from bloating and pain.
