Last night I test drove my new "TO THE CHEF" cards I adapted to my needs from page 280 of Tex's book. Here is a copy:
TO THE CHEF
I suffer from multiple food sensitivities, and cannot eat the following:
GLUTEN, including wheat, rye, barley, semolina, etc. that is in flour, bread, cake, biscuit, pasta, cuscus, beer, malt vinegar
SOY, Soya, Soy Lecithin,, Worcester sauce, MSG, mayonnaise that contains soy oil
DAIRY, milk, cream, sour cream, butter, cheese, casein
We went to a French "destination" type restaurant for my Birthday last night. I handed the owner a copy, and he said they are getting a lot of requests for special diets lately. Last year I'd mentioned to the waitress my allergies, but apparently between her and the chef some translation was lost. Last night I had specially made salad dressing WITHOUT soy sauce in it, lamb tenderloins WITHOUT the sauce, (he said it contained butter), and side of veggies WITHOUT the potatoes au gratin, substituted a yukon gold with olive oil brushed on it and baked. They'd asked if it was a special occasion, and Dave said it was my Birthday. So for dessert they apologized for my being unable to eat their complimentary chocolate mousse, so instead gave me the table's 2 gorgeous roses to take home.
So I really felt that the card--actually it ended up being a slip of paper--worked very well, because when we were there a year ago and am sure that I had the house dressing, sauce on the lamb, and au gratin in the veggie side. Fortunately I don't remember a reaction, but don't want to shoot myself in the foot.
Hope this will help someone, and needless to say, if there are any suggestions, I'd welcome them. This originally came from Ant, and I adapted this from the one shown in Tex's book.

Hi Beverly,
Thank you for sharing that experience. It's always a pleasure to read about dining experiences that turn out well.
Thanks for trying the card, and a belated

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
