Cruise Line food issues

Post by HockeyMom »

Hey all-
I've had a sort of mini meltdown the past month or two but seem to be getting things back under control. Hubby and I rode Pedal the Plains for 3 day last week (176 miles) and we lived through the food available in three small eastern Colorado towns!!
We are booked for a specialty cruise on Holland America next October and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with eating on these ships with food issues..I've been on three cruises but not being gf/df/sf. Hubby is just gf..their website just sort of says something to the effect of "call us a few weeks beforehand ".. I definitely can haul some food items onto the ship with me if needed.
Anyone??

Hi Hockeymom,

I've got the same concerns about taking a cruise. I think they're quite used to handling GF and perhaps even DF and SF. But I don't know if they are accustomed to handling all of them at the same time in a baked product.

If you are willing to forego any baked products and just eat paleo (meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts only), you might be fine, as long as they understand your restrictions. If you can eat rice and potatoes, you have even more options, if they will withhold the milk and butter, or substitute GF milk.

My grandson has a very limited diet and just went on a Disney cruise. Every evening the waiter came to the table with his toasted cheese sandwich, stripped of the crust. My daughter was pretty impressed with their attentiveness to his diet.

She thinks I might be satisfied, too, but I think I would have to bring too many food items along. My question is: will they store my homemade items in a freezer? Would they cook my corn noodles? What about my gravy, which I really want on the noodles? Those are the concerns I have.

I would check with the cruise line first, as suggested. Are you going this October or next year?

In general, cruise lines do a much better job of accommodating special diet needs than any other place where we are likely to eat away from home. If you will notify them with the complete details of your needs in advance, they will be prepared when you board the ship, and they will go out of their way to make sure that you will be able to eat well (and safely), and that you'll be able to relax and enjoy your cruise.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks. Gloria, we are going October 2014. It's a Rhythm and Blues Cruise and they book up way in advance obviously!! We are big blues fans and have wanted to do this for awhile.
I can surely do the paleo thing and just haul some baked goods on board initially. On the bike rides I haul my own almond milk with me..I hope they would have that as an option also on a Cruise ship!!
Basically I'm a tea drinker but used to love my occasional "foofy " coffee drink at Starbucks..but they don't do almond milk last time I went there..too bad for them..alot of the independent coffee shops offer it as an option here (I was shocked to get a df/sf mocha in Rocky Ford last week)..
Ok..now I'm just rambling. Have great week guys.

Lucky you, Holland is my favorite cruise line.
I went on a Trans Atlantic cruise last year, it was not Holland. They bent over backwards for me. Every night at dinner they would bring me the menu for the next night so that I could pick my meal and they would make sure it was OK. That was GF, SF, and DF. Desserts were tough, but a couple of times they made me jello with fruit. Breakfasts on the Lido were a little more difficult. They tried to make GF pancakes that were horrible, so I just had eggs, bacon, potatoes, ham and fruit. There is plenty to pick from. Lunch again on the Lido was easier, there was always salad, some kind of meat, potatoes, rice. So, all and all it was pretty easy. Let them know ahead of time what your intolerances are and as soon as you board, find someone, I think the Maitre D and go over your food issues with him. If you have any problems on the Lido just find a manager.

I did bring some nut butter, GF crackers and a few other things from home.

Enjoy, everything will be just fine.
