Is the flu shot a bad idea for those of us with MC?
I have an appt. for the shot tomorrow. I've gotten the shot every year, but have never had a bad reaction, however I didn't notice whether it caused MC issues.

Polly,
Thanks for sharing. That must be exactly what I had. After my flu shot reaciton I developed numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and it spread to my lips and tongue. I had it for 17 months and it disappeared within a few days of going gluten free.

All of my problems started with the flu shot. It seems I had a cytokine storm from the vaccine (most likely the preservative in the vaccine) that triggered mast cells and subsequent issues. My reactions were bad for 4 years. I know Polly also reacted to the flu shot. From articles Tex has posted, it seems that the flu vaccine is ineffective. Many of us bump our vitamin D supplementation in fall/winter to help protect against flu.

I got the flu vaccine last year, but still had a terrible case of the Noro virus. I was sicker than I've been in years. I'm still deciding whether I want to get one this year. DH already got his.
I've never noticed an effect on my MC from it, though, and I'm pretty reactive to eggs.

The only year I didn't get the shot I got such bad flu I was sick for months, and I think the z pac they gave me for the bronchitis I developed started the MC. I was vomiting and having uncontrollable D together. First time I had this and it seemed to go on for a long time. Cleared up then, but it came back again, and again until, after having IV antibiotics in hospital, it turned into watery D 24/7 for 4 months straight, and was finally diagnosed.
Short version? I will never risk it again.

Leslie,
That's exactly how my MC symptoms began. I thought that I had the flu. But it would clear up, and then start over again. That went on for over a year, until finally the D wouldn't stop.
And you're so right — uncontrollable D and vomiting make a miserable combination. I wasted many, many hours that way.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
