It's been a little while......

Post by LindyLou »

Good morning everyone. It's been a while since I've posted here but I've been on a health quest with my parathyroid problem and after fighting with endocrinologists I have finally made headway  . Last April through having a very diligent primary care doctor it was discovered that I had high parathyroid hormone levels along with high calcium and Hashimoto's disease. He referred me to an endo who was pretty much worthless. After another consult with PCP was sent to another endo. I was having monthly labs drawn and one month he would diagnose me as hyperparathyroid then the next month I wasn't. At my September visit although my lab values were normal, both PTH and Ca levels were at the high end. Of course throughout all this time I tried to educate myself as much as possible and as a result argued that if my Ca numbers were on the high end of normal then my PTH numbers should have been on the low side of normal as they work on a biofeedback loop. He offered to have a sestamibi nuclear scan done but I had already learned that that test was not supposed to be used as I diagnostic tool. To make a long story shorter, he ended up referring me to the University of Michigan chief of endocrine surgery who I met on Tuesday. Yesterday his nurse called to tell me the new labs came back and I DO have primary hyperparathyroidism!!! I should be having surgery within the next month and hopefully a lot of the symptoms will resolve. I've never been so excited about a disease. One thing I have noticed is there are so many people with this disease that also have been diagnosed with IBS and after their surgery those problems have either resolved or have been greatly reduced. Life is looking up. Soon I won't feel like the bottom of a garbage can.
Welcome to all of the new members!

Love,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Apparently most doctors have reached the point where they're either afraid of diagnosing anything other than the most obvious cases (because of liability risks), or they're too lazy to try to figure out the difficult cases that might actually take a little time and effort to properly treat.

That's great that you've finally received a diagnosis that makes sense, and I hope that this does indeed lead to a resolution of your symptoms.

Thanks for the update, and please keep us posted.

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
