Do Air Pollutants Play a Role in Bowel Disease?
Appears researchers are studying further the possibility that IBD conditions could be in part linked to air pollution.

What amazes me about most researchers (and most GI specialists) is that they're capable of suspecting a connection with air pollution, but diet isn't even on their radar. Well Doh! LOL.
Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I agree Tex! It really is amazing at how dismissive the whole health care system can be of nutritional ideas at times. I ran into a situation the other week. While at an oral surgeon facility I happily mentioned how wonderful is was now that I pretty much had healthy teeth and gums after I changed my diet, with avoiding grains, plus taking vitamin D and vitamin K2. In the past my dental health went down the drain when I developed MC. I was a cavity making machine! - despite how much I brushed, flossed, and made dental cleaning appointments. With out blinking an eye he basically dismissed my improved oral health and replied that wasn't possible, keeping teeth clean with tooth paste and a brush is what matters. Ok, thanks for the tip.
The same thing happened to me, except that my teeth started swarming on me about 5 or 6 years before my GI symptoms showed up. LOL. Prior to that, they were problem free.Blueberry wrote:In the past my dental health went down the drain when I developed MC. Apparently that comedian in the white coat that you encountered has never heard of the association between enamel loss and gluten sensitivity. Maybe he thinks that tooth decay is caused by air pollution, and that's why brushing will eliminate the problem. LOL.

Yeah, the whole thing in some respects reminds me of that Robert Frost poem I believe called the Mending Wall. It's there the two neighbors come together to repair a stone wall, with one of the two not sure why the wall is being rebuilt but feels with tradition should be. I felt the surgeons mention was little thought out, just automatically going by what he was told in the past.
There is actually more to the story, which is kind of humorous. I mention it not to be a smart aleck about events. And actually I'm not educated enough to know the truth one way or another. I'm just hoping to get this tooth eventually taken care of. It is a case of where a white lie mushroomed into what appears to be more. Well, the story begins when an old drilled out root canal tooth broke. To take care of the problem I needed to see an oral surgeon. There the remaining tooth would be removed, and a new dental implant installed. It was an obnoxious procedure. The tooth needed to be drilled out, and then afterwords long term healing done. A bone graft was installed and overtime heal, become solid in place. From what the new tooth implant can be installed onto.
To protect the bone graft I was given a retainer like device, called a flipper to wear. This would protect the graft. Well, I didn't care much for the flipper. It tended to pinch some, and caused me to slur my words when talking. Far to often I found myself not wearing the flipper as I should. And that is where the problem began.
One day eating lunch I forget to wear my flipper and bit down onto the bone graft hard. It came loose. Oh dammit! I was only a few days aware from my typical follow up appointment so i went to that as scheduled. When there I was brought to the back by a nurse. I pointed out the loose bone graft, not mentioning why it happened with my forgetting to wear the flipper. She looks area over and declares I have an infection. She can see puss. Really? I'm asked about how often I clean my teeth, what do I use, the usual dental drill. The oral surgeon comes in and declares I must not be healing and lost bone in the area. Only an infection can cause that.
So he said more time was needed to allow further healing of the area. I should also take a weeks worth of antibiotics to get the infection under control.
I picked up the antibiotics at the drug store, but in the end didn't take them. Last thing I needed was to fire back up my gut issues by taking these, which looked very unnecessary.
So after a week goes by I head back to the office to have the area looked over again. They wanted to see if the infection was under control. I was asked about the antibiotics. Not being sneaky, but gave a lawyers answer saying I had picked them up. Which then after looking the tooth area over it was declared that the area now looked much healthier, the infection was gone. Jesus wept!
I'm pretty good about wearing my flipper now with the latest bone graft.
I can remember well the time too when I shared with my regular dentist an article from The Townsend Letter. This was back in the late 90s. The article was on how wheat gluten can cause dental problem. My dentist didn't believe the article. Said it couldn't be true. I only have myself to blame in that I listened to him and kept eating wheat products, which then I experienced further dental deterioration. Sometimes I wish that hadn't been the case.

Interesting stories. Live takes some unexpected twists and turns at times, but I suppose it's all part of our education, for better or for worse.
