Side effects of antihistamines?

Post by DOREEN »

I started taking Claritin last week and it has made a huge difference in my MC. I was basically having a bad flare for the past few months. Everything I was eating was going right through me and causing WD. It felt like I was reacting to everything.
I read about taking Antihistamines on this website and decided to try it. Well After taking just one Claritin the flare stopped that night and now I'm back to eating like I was before the flare which is basically everything on the Paleo Diet including some dairy like cream butter and cheese.
My question is about the effects of an antihistamine on the body. Could taking Claritin every day for a long period of time have a negative effect?I read an article about histamine someone pasted a link for on this message board and it showed all the things histamine is involved with in the body. Would Claritin interfere with them and have a negative effect over time?

Congratulations, Doreen! I don't have the answer to your question, but am certain someone will respond soon.

I wanted to comment as I am surprised when so many try Claritin and it works so quickly for them. I am one who it did nothing for. Have tried Claritin, Allegra, Benedryl and no improvements.

BTW do you know what your food sensitivities are? I don't see any listed. I was surprised to hear you are able to eat dairy. Lucky you.

Anyway, congratulations on the huge improvement Claritin has made for you.

Wishing you continued improvements.

Hi Paula
So I uploaded all my food intolerances so they should show up, I probably have more but I can't think of them right now.
I'm so excited about the Claritin I only hope it lasts and doesn't stop working. I also ordered Histame and I will start that tonight.
I doubt it would have worked for me when I first got sick in 2005 but I've done so much to heal and detoxify my gut over the years that I thing I'm at a Different level if you know what I mean so it was able to help me.

Hi Doreen,

Many people take antihistamines long-term for conventional pollen/mold/dust allergies, and I'm not aware any research or case study articles that describe any long-term damage because of this practice. One thing to keep in mind is that antihistamines do typically increase blood pressure, but that's a temporary effect that resolves when the medication is discontinued. It can be a consideration for someone who has high BP to begin with, but the boost is typically not very large.

There is a good chance that it won't be necessary for you to take antihistamines long-term, because after your body completes the healing process, your mast cell activity should return to normal.

I believe that you're viewing antihistamines in the proper context — they're not really a first line of defense treatment for MC. Instead, they often come in very handy when we are doing everything right, but we're not quite able to reach remission. In that situation, the right antihistamine or antihistamines can often tip the balance to allow us to reach virtually instant remission.

Claritin never did much for me either. Although, I was only taking one a day. I started taking two Allegra each morning and it seemed to help more. I was alternating Allegra and Zyrtec until I read a post that Zyrtec had lactose in it. Not sure how I missed that one. I just finished being very stubborn about not having any lactose in my thyroid meds so felt a bit dumb. I didn't notice anything too terrible when taking it but I don't see the sense in tempting it when I know it can be an issue for me.

Ok I guess I understand it better now. I certainly feel as though I've done a lot of healing over the years, thanks to being mostly Paleo. The Claritin has just pushed me alittle further to health? It's been a miracle for me.
I did SCD for about 2 years after I got sick and it helped a lot then I just got stuck, I think because I was eating beans. When I went Paleo and cut them out it was a big help.
It's only recently, say within the past 6 mos that I've been able to do any dairy. If I got near it before it made me extremely ill. Throat tight, mouth sores, sores in the corner of my mouth and lots of gut rumblings and D. It's such a blessing being able to add it since I love cheese!

I agree, I love dairy products too. Cheese and yogurt were hard to give up. Swiss, Parmesan, mozzarella......it almost is a sin to live in the dairy state and pass on such treats.
