Options from my GI
She wants me to take Imuran which I really don't want to take and see a GI at UAB (University of Alabama Birmingham) for further options.

Joan,
I have been taking Imuran for almost two years with no problems at all. I was on Entocort for about 8 months and slowly weaned off of that and on Imuran. JoeF is also on it and another girl who does not post any more. It's a drug that has been around for many years and I have lab work done every three months to make sure everything is OK. It has given me back my old life, I've gained my weight back and doing all the activities I use to do. I remain GF, SF, DF. If I have a little dairy here and there is does not bother me, same with soy, but I stay away from gluten.
If Joe sees this, he may pop on and give you much better advise than I can.
Good luck with your dicision.

THANK YOU, Nancy. I appeciate your comments.
I don't want my weight back, though. I don't want any more hair gone either.
I need to read my Tex book, too, and do a PP search.
There is a site named Treato and some posts point back to PP.

I'm certain to get along with this GI, NOT
"Dr. M didn't listen to my symptoms at all and refused to listen to the fact that certain medicines he was suggesting had failed to alleviate my problems. I found him very unhelpful and rude."

Joan,
I don't know much about Imuran, but I'd think that it wouldn't be advisable for someone who is a cancer survivor because it's an immune suppressant.
I've thought about Pentasa because I'm tired of being on a steroid and Pentasa is slightly cheaper. Pentasa activates sooner than Entocort and Pat reported success with it, though she still has to closely watch her diet. Here are her most recent reports:

Joan as others have mentioned there are several of us on Imuran for MC and it is tolerated quite well. A vast majority of Crohn's patients use it as well.
It does not result in hair loss, or at least a very very small amount. I know it did not thin my hair out and Nancy well did quite well with Imuran.
The part I like more about it is its very lpng and safe track record, its been around since the 50's and is well understood and has a very sage track record, more so than the other meds mentioned here.
As we all know, we need to feel comfortable with the choices of our meds, its important that we accept the med and give it an honest try
...for me the 50+ year track record gave me peace of mind.
Best Wishes Joan

Joan,
Just to let you know I am also a cancer survivor. The 50+ year track record that Joe mentioned is what tipped the scale for me when I was on the fence about it. I have not lost any hair either.
But, like Joe said you have to be confortable with the meds you take. I just felt that time is ticking away as I am 69 and there is so much I want to do. Like I said I still watch my diet and am quite careful, but can eat a lot more than I could before.
Good luck and keep us posted.
