Entocort not the culprit
Doc says Entocort not causing my current problems. She said that my resistance is right down & I would be vulnerable to any of the many bugs around right now & also probably get a more severe dose. Weakened immune system makes you more susceptible to these things. She had me in there for 3/4 hour & checked everything over. Don't start antibiotics until tomorrow because of other drugs I am taking. Chest pretty yukky.
She has written a long letter summarising my medical history for my new GI Doc who I am to see on 6th January. A bit like a novel really
I am to keep on the Entocort until then.
Going to go to bed straight after tea & see how I feel in the morning. I am supposed to be coaching on Saturday morning & all day Sunday but will have to play it by ear & see how I am by then.
Love

Poor Liz! I remember last year....I think I had 4 different colds....I blame it on my lowered immunity because of the Entocort. This year, my Entocort dosage has been lowered and I'll be darned, I have been healthy as a horse this fall...(knock on wood). The kids at school have had all forms of flu...and some pretty bad bugs...pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections.....I have really been lucky.
I hope you feel better soon....rest dear friend...Love, JJ

Hi Liz,
I'm not sure that I understand your doctor's logic, but I will agree that the Entocort is probably not casusing your respiratory symptoms, directly. As Jill mentioned, Entocort is an immune system suppressant, which means that it leaves you much more vulnerable to becoming infected by viruses, and other pathogens, than you would normally be, without it.
Your doctor suggested that you caught a virus because of a weakened immune system, but the Entocort is probably the primary reason why your immune system has been weakened, in the first place. Of course, it's certainly possible that your immune system was already compromised, before you started taking the Entocort, but that only makes the situation more critical, since the Entocort will almost certainly further supress your resistance.
One has to be much more careful, to try to avoid exposure to infectious agents, when taking immune system supressing drugs, such as the corticosteroids. Group encounters are much riskier, when you have a suppressed immune system, since the odds are strong, that the larger the group, the higher the odds that someone will be in an infectious stage of disease development, and will be shedding/spreading infectious agents that you are vulnerable to.
Love,
Wayne

Thanks for the feedback. I am only on Entocort up until I see the new GI doc in January. Perhaps he will reduce the dose or suggest something else. Don't want to go back on Prednisone if it is at all possible. Already have reduced bone density due to previous courses of it.
Thinking seriously of giving the coaching a miss at the weekend. Not only because of the risk of more infection but because I really don't feel well enough.
The bright side is that the D has reduced measurably. Inhalents are helping a lot to break up the conjestion.
Now if I can just get both ends of me under control things will be a lot better.
Thanks for the hugs, made me feel better already.

Liz,
That sounds encouraging. I'll bet in a couple of days, you'll be feeling much better, in every way.
I agree with you. Prednisone is strictly a last-ditch medication, to be used when the chips are down, and results are essential.
To be honest, I don't consider Entocort to be anywhere near as risky as Prednisone. They are several orders of magnitude apart, as far as health risks, and side effects, are concerned. Entocort is a pretty safe med, when used as directed, since it's not a systemic, like Prednisone.
As much as I hate meds, if I felt that I needed it, to get "straightened out", I would be willing to try Entocort. I don't believe that I could ever convince myself to take Prednisone, though.

Hi Wayne
The Prednisone was going down the desperation route back in 2001 when I was first diagnosed with CC. It did the trick as far as the D was concerned but the side effects are not very good as you know. When I told my Doc that it was a 'bad' drug, the reply was that it is a 'good' drug when you need it but like all good things they can sometimes come at a price.
I have a friend who was on it for some time for very bad psoriasis & she now has not only osteoporosis but severe liver & kidney damage as well. She still has the psoriasis.

Hi m
I coach Lawn Bowls. Am currently coaching our sides for Premier League which is to commence in January. I also run coaching clinics in my own & other clubs in my district as well as individual coaching. I really enjoy it & have been a coach for about 22 - 23 years & a level 2 for 15 of those years.

Hi Liz!!
Hoping to hear in a few days that you are feeling better.
Get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids!!!!
It is true that the Entocort will make you more susceptible to colds, flu, etc.., if you are around someone that is contagious. That's one of the side effects on the clinical..
I'm so bad when I go out to a store that if I hear someone coughing, etc., I immediately head the other direction.. LOL!!!!
Enjoy that cup of tea ....

Hello Dee
Am on antibiotics (hope it doesn't stir up the D) so that should take care of the infection in my bronchial tubes. Just have to be careful,as you say. I think I will becoming a bit paranoic about people coughing and sneezing as well.
Just had a cuppa, weak black tea because can't have dairy products 2 hours either side of the antibiotic.
Going to go & do a bit more of the inhalent stuff, it does help.
