How Am I Doing?
I almost forgot--Luce asked for an update on my condition.
Well, as far as I can tell, I'm still doing ok. I had another appointment at the clinic yesterday, where someone checked my incision, and judged it to be "healing ok".
So, I still have to pack it with gauze twice a day, and hope that it grows shut. (How it's going to grow shut, with me packing gauze in it twice a day, is still a mystery to me, but they're the experts, so I'll do my part, and hope it works). Next appointment is 4 weeks from yesterday.
Luce, you mentioned it being cold--yep, it was cold yesterday. Cold for Central Texas in early December, anyway. At daybreak, it was about 40 degrees F, and raining. The temperature slowly cooled down, as the wind picked up from the North. By the time I got to the clinic, (about 1 pm), the rain was just beginning to freeze on the windshield. By the time I got through with the clinic, and a little shopping for supplies and grocieries, and started back home, the temp was about 24 degrees, and it was all the defroster could do, to keep the windshield clear. Before I got home, the road was beginning to ice over, and I had a slight problem making the last couple of turns. This is a pretty good norther for this early in the season. I assume that those of you North of me, have also noticed that fact. LOL.
The North wind is still blowing 15-30 mph, and the predicted low for tonight is 10 to 15 degrees, which will set a record for this early in the season, if it goes as predicted. It'll probably make it, since the predicted low for last night was 23 degrees, and we had 19 this morning. I noticed that Amarillo had -3 this morning, and there's only about 450 miles, and a few mesquite trees, and barbed wire fences, between here and Amarillo. LOL.
Oma lives about halfway between here and Amarillo, so I'll bet it's cold there.

Wayne

Bundle up and stay warm, Tex!!!
Sounds absolutely miserable to me. I think there has been plenty of (early) cold weather in upstate Pa. too. Glad I'm not there.
So happy you seem to be coming along OK and no new problems showing up.

Shirley,
How are you doing these days. I don't remember seeing any updates on you, in a while, and I've been meaning to ask.

Wayne,
I'm glad to hear your incision is healing "ok". Don't you love that word? My boss uses it constantly. It can mean so many things LOL.
Anyway, I'm not sure how things heal with gauze packed in there either. My only guess would be that it draws the puss or oozing sludge from the wound area into the gauze and the less moist, the less the chances of infection?? Dunno. Maybe it's as simple as you can't go walking around with your guts showing.
I'm in MN, straight up I-35 from Texas (Dallas/Ft. Worth). We had a night low of somewhere south of -14, because when we were going to work in the morning, the bank thermometer read -14. Insanity. The wind chill can be much colder, so a 10-15 mph wind really cuts into you. You can bundle up, but you have to breathe.. it's funny but it freezes the inside of your nose (mucous membrane). Feels like your nose hairs are frozen and if you have any boogers they're like little ice cubes weighing down your frozen nosehairs LOL.
Anyway, it's gonna be a cold, snowy winter. We're supposed to get more snow tomorrow, so the temp will drop yet again.. *gee, can't wait. It makes going to work a real chore.
Love,
Christine

Hi Christine,
Yep, "ok" is an ok word. LOL.
Actually, my guts aren't really visable, (not yet, anyway). The skin is gaped open about 3/4 of an inch wide, by about two inches long, along with the layer of muscle/fat or whatever that is below the skin, but there's another membrane below that to hold my guts in. LOL. I wonder if maybe they implanted a reinforcing plate of some type, because when you probe the wound with a swab, it feels pretty solid, rather than flexible, as a membrane would be.
All I can say about this cold weather is, it sucks, big time. LOL.

Happy to hear that you're doing okay. Wayne!!
That packing the wound though doesn't sound like alot of fun to me..
Speaking of it being cold, it is snowing like crazy here in Ohio. Saying that we are to get an inch an hour. 4-6 inches of snow by tomorrow morning.
It was 4 degrees when I left for work this morning! BURRRRRRR!!!!
I sure could go for that Bonita Beach, Florida right about now.. Maybe in a couple months!!
Love

I'm with Dee, it is snowing something fierce here in my part of Ohio too. I am NOT looking forward to the drive to work in the morning!
Sounds mighty cold pretty much everywhere right now. I figure I won't be warm until........let's say.............JUNE!
Stay warm everyone!

We even broke a record for the lowest recorded high for this date in Houston -- got all the way up to 37!
Silly me hadn't yet wrapped the outside pipes, so was out squatting in the dirt this afternoon doing that. Hit my thinned skinned knuckles against the rough bricks immediately behind the pipes as I was wrapping the tape around, and so now there's blood all over the tape -- looks a bit like a crime scene!
Anyway, we're expecting the low overnight to be about 30 degrees here, but wouldn't surprise me if it didn't dip lower. Tomorrow night, should be in the twenties, even this far south. At least here the rains came BEFORE the freezing temps. Perhaps you've seen the big trucks sliding all over that overpass on I-20 somewhere between Fort Worth and Dallas. One year back in the late 70's, I remember literally CREEPING all the way from Dallas to Fort Worth over those frozen highways and all the other streets as well during one of their famous ice storms. We seldom have ice storms down here, fortunately. That was so tragic about the plane sliding off the runway in Chicago and killing that little boy.
Glad you're doing well, Wayne, and certainly glad you made it home safely! Keep up the good work!
Christine, you certainly have a way with words!!! Ha!
Yours, Luce

Hi Wayne,
My son had a gunshot injury - yes, a hole right through his foot. It had to be packed, and that hurt like crazy. But it was to keep it healing from the inside towards the outside. I don't know if it's true, but I thought it was so that the wound didn't seal over on the outside and trap fluids or bacteria on the inside before it was healed.
He's fine now: big huge lump of scar tissue on his foot, though. He was really lucky that it didn't injure or sever any tendons. (You could see them at the time, they looked like white piano wire running through the flesh) Pretty cool.
He's now in San Angelo, Wayne, at GoodFellow AFB.
I'm really glad to hear you're well . . Marsha

Marsha,
You're quite correct, of course. Keeping the wound open, forces it to heal from the inside out, and prevents any undesirable stuff from being trapped inside. (My comments about not understanding how it could ever heal, with me stuffing gauze in it, were tongue-in-cheek). It gets easier every day, and it obviously is healing.
I'm glad that your son's injury healed without any long-term problems. I have to agree that he was very lucky that no tendons were severed, or seriously injured. I assume he's in the air force, if he's at Angelo.

Yes, Tex, glad to hear you are doing well and improving. I had been doing very well until the middle of the night last night when I woke up and my left side stings...I went through the same thing on the right side several weeks ago, and from what I gather its from internal stitches disolving. But I'm moving more gingerly today. Hoping it feels better by tomorrow because I was supposed to go Christmas shopping with Geoff. Today I'm bunkered down and doing no walks in the yard anyway as we are getting a lovely snow storm....6-10 inches expected. It is peaceful on the hill when its snowing though. Hopefully Geoff makes it home from work without too much trouble (he has MY car).
