Good News About Bone Density

I don't post much anymore, but visit this site pretty often. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago, and went gluten, dairy and soy free. A few weeks ago I got a DEXA Bone Density Scan, with the previous one being 3 years ago. I was pleased to learn that my bone density hadn't deteriorated at all and was the same as 3 years ago! Prior to going gluten free, I had seen a steady decline in my bone density over the previous 10 years to where I was osteopenic and on the way to osteoporotic. Besides keeping my LC under control with diet, I have also worked on my vitamin D level, which was up to 79 by two years ago. So at least for me, colitis control through diet and optimal Vit D levels have stopped the slide!

Wow!! I really needed to hear that news!! My bone density has declined for 10 years and I'm hoping that the changes I'm making will bring the results you have achieved! Settling into a diagnosis and developing a livable diet is hard work. Those of us who are early in our journey need encouragement from people like you. Thanks, Rosie. Please post again :wave:

Settling into a diagnosis and developing a livable diet is hard work.
DJ, it does get a lot easier over time. I feel that I eat really well at home now, with good variety and a tasty rotation. I have slowly evolved into a more "paleo" style diet where I don't eat nearly as much grain as I used to. Mostly it evolved because my husband has found that he needs to eat low carb, so I don't fix pasta, rice, potatoes and deserts very often. But I must admit that I feel healthier eating fewer grains, so when I indulge, it's with modest portions. The only negative is that I have a hard time putting on weight, although I have always been slender. But I was a bit worried that at 67 years old, 5' 5" and at a stable 118 lbs that my bone health would continue to suffer. But evidently not, once my colitis and the attendant malaborption problems were under control! And while I am active and exercise a bit, I admit that I should do more for my bone health.
Those of us who are early in our journey need encouragement from people like you.
I try to post a yearly update, but haven't so far this year. You have given me a good nudge, and I'll do that in the next week!
