I got my life back!
I read Tex's book 14 months ago and for the first time was hopeful that at some point in the future I could lead a somewhat normal life. I have had MC for approximately 20 years and the symptoms had gotten quite bad. Not only did I have diarrhea 5-10 times a day, but I had begun to lose control of that function and had begun to feel very sick. After reading Tex's book, I immediately went gluten and dairy free and after seeing a nutritionist, also went caffeine, soy, corn, sugar, nut, bean, etc. free. I didn't see much improvement in the first few months and lost about 15 pounds. Those were tough times. However, gradually I started to improve. The first thing that I regained was the loss of urgency and waking up at night to go to the bathroom. After 6 months or so, after seeing improvement, I started to add things back and now eat soy and dairy with no problem, but no lactose. I still avoid nuts, beans, caffeine, alcohol, sugar and processed foods. I try to eat only healthy foods.
After 14 months, I am MUCH better. I still have more frequency than a normal person, but the very watery diarrhea is almost all gone. (Sorry to be so graphic.) I had gone to Mayo Clinic several times and had tried many medications. Nothing helped and I was truly despondent. Thank you so much, Tex, and others in this group. I turned to this site often during the past year and it gave me hope. The diet works-stick with it!

Alice,
Your story is very inspiring, and you are to be commended for continuing to search for a solution after so many years of having to deal with the symptoms of the disease. You've proven that dedication and perseverance are the key to controlling MC.
It takes years for the damage caused by MC to heal (especially after 20 years of inflammation), but you appear to be well on your way. I hope that you continue to improve until all your remaining symptoms are completely gone.
Thank you for your thoughtful and uplifting post. It's success stories such as yours that make all our efforts on this board so very gratifying. Needless to say, your success story has made my day, and my week.
Take good care of yourself, and keep us updated.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Yes, Tex's book was a god-send for many of us. My story went much like yours except Tex's book was not written yet and I followed his posts instead. I had the same kind of success as you in much the same time frame. Isn't it lovely to use the toilet with less frequency and experience less gut aches?!! It's true what they say, "you can get your life back" and it may not look the same. It's a beautiful life with a few adaptations.
