And for the first time, the guidelines take aim at preventing strokes, not just heart attacks. Partly because of that, they set a lower threshold for using medicines to reduce risk. They recommend using statin drugs such as Lipitor and Zocor, and identify four groups of people they help the most. The end result: Twice as many Americans — one-third of all adults — would be told to consider taking statins, which lower cholesterol but also reduce heart risks in other ways

Because what we need as a country is more drugs! Many people on their "panel" have interests in the drug companies!

Promoting drugs is a bit like promoting rock stars — you have to push 'em as hard as you can, before the bubble bursts. Obviously there must still be a lot of money left on the table regarding statins. The most-prescribed drug in the country is Crestor:

P. T. Barnum knew what he was talking about.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I am saving for this test.

I want to make sure, for once and for all, what my high cholesterol means. In any event I won't take statins.

I recall in the past some statin promotors wanting statins added to the water supply. Seems in the end they might get their way.

A few weeks ago I recall seeing a national TV special in Australia about statins not being terribly helpful for most. It was a damning report. As a result I've seen a few articles about people in that country stopping their medication. With these recent new recommendations in the US, almost seems as if new statin sales are needed to be made elsewhere in the world to made up the difference.

Hi, Statin drugs have a bad side effect called "Rhabdomyolysis". A relative was prescribed it and after two weeks had difficulty standing up and walking. Stopped taking it and the symptoms improved slowly. Jon
