Hi,
It's been a while since I post a message in this forum, and that definitly has something to do with the fact that my bowels are behaving the way to have to:)!
I was diagnosed with MC last Februari, and from februari till july I had pain, D and the other stuff almost everyday. Had to use Entocort, Prednison and at the end Immuran..but nothing worked. At the same time I did n alternative treatment with something like N.E.A.T (slightly different). Still sick all the time, lost over 8 kg again.
Then..in July I went to Ghana for one month, were I only ate Ricewaffels, mango, banana, groundnutbutter, rice and some small amount of veggies..and unbelieveble, but after one week I felt totally fine..and even started to gain some weight (in Africa, come on)! Back home still oke, sometimes a bit of D but nothing to mention. For now..i've been gluten and dairy free since februari but last month I spend two weeks in Jordan and Israel. I lived on Hummus and ricewaffles again...suspected to get kind of sick..cause it happend that some bread and hummus were stored in the same place, same plate etc. But again..had one of the best holidays:)!
So, no i'm home..and yesterday my grandma gave me a big box with my favourite-chocolate. With gluten and dairy, right. Normally I would smile, but definitly not eat, but this time I thought..let's give it a try. Ok..and then ofc, I couldnt stop so I had 250 gr of chocolate with gluten and dairy last night. Now..almost 12 hours later..its still inside, no pain and huh?! How is this possible?
Is it a possibility that the MC is gone? Or am I playing with fire..?
Are there more people who can eat gluten and dairy without big problems?
M really curious:)!
Mariska

Hi Mariska,
Not everyone reacts to gluten or dairy immediately. After they have been in remission for a while, some people will not begin to react until after they have eaten gluten long enough to accumulate a significant amount of intestinal damage.
Some people even develop a tolerance for gluten or dairy, and they can eat it without showing any clinical symptoms, but their intestines still continue to be damaged as long as they eat those foods. Many undiagnosed celiacs don't even realize that they are celiacs, because they are asymptomatic, and therefore they don't have any apparent digestive problems. An examination under a microscope of biopsy samples from their intestines will show extensive damage from gluten however, and they have a higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases.
I can tolerate dairy without any clinical symptoms, for example. But the EnteroLab stool test result showed that I produce antibodies to casein (the primary protein in all dairy products), so I avoid all traces of dairy. Our genes determine how much risk we are exposing ourselves to by eating gluten even though we are sensitive to it. If we are lucky (and we have good genes), it may not matter. But most of us aren't that lucky, and if we continue to eat gluten, our risk of developing additional autoimmune diseases remains high, and may even increase.

I just got over a six-week flare caused by thinking I could eat soy. Almost all chocolate candy has soy lecithin in it. My husband bought me my favorite candy bar, not realizing this, and I ate it in a moment of weakness. I had no reaction, so I thought, "Oh, joy--I can eat candy bars!" So over the next several days, I had more candy bars. HUGE MISTAKE!!!
If you have a certain amount of healing in your gut, you can probably tolerate insulting it, once or maybe twice. But please--learn from my mistake, and stay away from what you know you cannot eat.

Marliss, I'm with you. I've learned that lesson the hard wAy with several foods. Afterwards, I always wonder how dumb can I be? It's always a dream to think we can go back to offending foods even though we know better.

Thank you all, for your reactions...! And yes, i've to admit....you're all right (which I can say after I decided to eat some goatcheese as well) Pain, bloating and D since months, but ok..now I do know why I don't eat it anymore. Just praying that it wont cause n real flare up..
But again..thanks for your reactions:)
But again..thanks for your reactions:)
Mariska,
Many of us have wondered if we were "cured" after we recovered enough to where we felt normal again. But all it takes is a few days of eating the wrong foods to show us that we are not cured, after all.
You should be OK again in a week or so, as long as you don't eat any more of those foods.
