Need Advice-Fructose Malabsorption test tomorrow

Post by mcnomore »

I don't know whether I should drink 12oz of coke or 12oz of apple juice. Which would be least likely to cause a reaction?

The apple juice has ascorbic acid added.

I don't know anything about this test, but the apple juice is full of fructose, while the coke is probably sucrose.

Coke has high fructose corn syrup. Either one will be bad, but I want to take the test to see if I have fructose malabsorption.

I haven't had a coke in probably 30 years, but I have to drink either coke or apple juice because they have fructose so I can do the fructose breath test and that scares me. I guess I will take some immodium just in case.

My new gastro doc feels mc is absolutely connected to what we eat which is why he wants me to have the fructose breath test since so many fruits (and some vegies) have fructose.

"Many patients with collagenous colitis are having trouble with fructose containing foods. Fructose is found in all fruit, peas, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, sweet potatoes, corn, beets, carrots, turnips and winter squash. Additionally, all type of sugar must also be avoided (table sugar, sucrose, honey, maple syrup, molasses, agave, cane sugar)."

This is interesting... I was wondering if i might be pushing it to put honey or maple syrup in my tea... not sure, but if I am sensitive to fructose... this list is huge... i'v eeaten the winter squash. carrots, onions ( in broth)... wow! so many foods to consider!
soundslike you have a great doc! I am glad for you...

OH, I GET IT NOW. I WOULD DRINK THE APPLE JUICE. IT'S MORE NATURAL AND DOESN'T HAVE CAFFEINE.

I might be too late, but my old GI gave me a fodmaps list that listed intolerances and how to test for them. For fructose, it said to eat 2 TB of honey. I did, and was sick quite quickly. And it helped me see why I wasn't getting better as, prior, I was eating honey every night.

Here's a link to fodmaps. http://www.docdatabase.net/more-the-low ... 27962.html (It should have a box in the right hand side with a description of fodmaps foods and ways to test for them.)

Thanks Jennifer, that's really helpful. Had to put off my test until it's authorized due to new ins.

I began having trouble with my mango jam, which I made using 1/4 of the normal amount of sugar. I then made a batch using glucose sugar because the glucose/fructose ratio should be >1 for fructose intolerance, which I'm pretty sure I have. Using glucose didn't seem to make any difference. I had to throw both opened jars out today (which killed me) because the jam had gotten moldy after just a month. That shows how little sugar I used, but I still reacted.

I have never had problems with maple syrup or cane sugar. I'm starting to think it's the enzymes in the fruit which bother me. I get a funny taste in my mouth after I eat too much fruit.

Gloria, perhaps you have salicylate sensitivity rather than fructose mal. since sals are in most fruits and vegies as a natural preservative.

Mary Beth has suggested that also. I looked into it early on and dismissed the possibility - I don't remember why. I should revisit it again. I just can't spare any more foods at this point.

Mangoes have a moderate amount of sals, but maple sugar has a negligible amount.

Also, a number of the things you list as a problem for you are high in sals, like olives, vinegar, pepto bismal, tomatoes, cucumber, squash, etc. There is no test for it though. They say it has a bucket effect so you can eat some sals and then the bucket overflows, but I think that it can just cause a reaction since it is a pesticide.

My gastro doc totally believes that food intolerance/allergy is connected to mc if not the cause.
