It seems to me that it's more likely that the gluteomorphin contained in the residual traces of gluten that are present in Rice Milk may be the primary reason why you noticed a "gnawing feeling about the same time every day when your gut missed Rice Milk — it craved Rice Milk because of the gluteomorphin effect. And when you avoided Rice Milk for several consecutive days, that allowed your immune system to become more sensitive, so that when Rice Milk was reintroduced, you had a gluten reaction. As long as you drink Rice Milk every day, it's easy to develop a tolerance for it, because of the tiny dose of gluten in the Rice Milk. But you are still producing antibodies, just at a reduced level, and that keeps your immune system primed and fully alert for gluten. Gluten is a very insidious enemy, and it can manipulate our thinking, and our desires.

I stopped using Rice Milk 8 or 9 years ago, because it still contains traces of gluten, left over from the barley malt used to begin the malting process used by the manufacturer of Rice Milk. They claim that they remove most of the gluten during processing, so that the residual amount is under 20 ppm, but I've never seen a need to use a product that I know contains gluten, even when the amounts are tiny (and legal). Almond milk is gluten-free, and works just fine for most of us.

I know I'm beating the same drum, but I think it was the tomatoes, which are very high in histamines. I love, love them, but they don't love me back. They had to go, and I had a garden full of them this summer. I told DH that he should can his own tomato juice this summer - and he did!

Hi, Thank you Tex, I always wondered what happened to the malt. All of a sudden it was labeled gluten free. I stopped buying it after I had that reaction. I will sent your post to the members of the g-f support group. Jon

You're very welcome. I used to love Rice Milk, and I had to throw away almost a full case of it when I decided to give it up. It was like walking away from an old friend — I hated to do it, but I just couldn't force myself to continue using it when they finally owned up to everyone's suspicions. The frustrating part is that it's not necessary to malt rice before making rice milk, so they could make it 100 % gluten-free if they wanted to.

Gloria has been making rice milk for years, with excellent results (her recipe is in Dee's Kitchen), so we know that it can be done without any malting process. I'm guessing they do that either to "improve" the flavor (to add sweetness), or to increase their production yield, in order to lower their cost. Whatever the reason, they could do their customers who have a higher-than-normal sensitivity to gluten a big favor, if they would just lose the malt.

Update after seeing my rheumatologist today:

He had a phone conversation with my dermatologist after my visit in September when my rash was really bad. They agreed I should try Methotrexate, since my rash was not responding to prednisone. He also said current guidelines say I should be on Fosamax, since I've been on prednisone for more than 3 months. Yeah right!!!!!!!!! I said I wasn't keen on starting another immune suppressant in the middle of cold and flu season. Why would I trade an itchy rash for potentially more serious colds and infections, especially when I have kids bringing germs home?

Interestingly, my rash was angrier than normal today and I know why. My daughter was home sick with fever and a cold Monday and Tuesday. I was exposed countless times to her germs and as usual, didn't get sick. I believe my immune system was activated fighting off her virus, and it in turn activated my rash. The doctor agreed.

He was impressed by the improvement in my rash and was supportive of my autoimmune paleo diet and probiotic beverage. He said I could continue with the diet for now, but if I cannot wean off prednisone completely, I will eventually have to take Methotrexate (or Retuximab or other new DMARDs).

I lost 6 lbs since my last visit (down to 119), and my BP was 80/60, twice! They were nervous about letting me leave, but I guess that's my normal BP. Gotta eat more salt, drink more, get more calories in, and buy smaller clothes!

I have 6 weeks to continue to demonstrate my natural approaches are working. Wish me luck!
