Torture Time in my house again

Post by Gloria »

DH has begun melting chocolate for his annual holiday buttercream chocolates. He's using my recipe. Little did I know that sharing it years ago would mean I'd be resisting temptation to eat chocolate while the wonderful aroma hovers in the air.

Oh dear....that would be hard. I ate those soy free, casein free, gluten free choc chips last night. Too many - and I didn't feel good today and had D. Stupid. Maybe a few would have been ok....but I need to LEARN the hard way.

I know what you mean. I use to be a pastry chef. I make and box up chocolate truffles every holiday season. I can't seem to stop because so many people look forward to them! I can't even lick my hands :(

Gloria,

HORRIBLE! All that aroma in the house! I'd go bonkers from all the sweet smell.. not only can't have chocolate (MC) I can't have sugar (diabetes)!

Yes, I find that aromas that bother me the most. I suppose it wouldn't be so hard if I could eat a different treat, but I'm limited to a muffin, turkey or pork sausage, or a slice of dried mango. They're not so appealing with that aroma in the house. I hope he's done making them soon.

Thanks for being here for me to complain. It helps to know someone understands.

When I cut out casein, I cut out chocolate (because I never was a fan of dark chocolate). So I hadn't eaten any chocolate for almost 2 years. A couple of weeks ago, while shopping, I noticed some Lindt chocolate in various strengths, so I looked through it and found a couple that were soy free (and free of everything else, of course) and I decided to buy them and see if I could convince myself to put up with the taste (this falls under the reasoning that any chocolate is better than no chocolate. LOL ).

I thought about them a few days ago, and tried a small corner of one bar. The taste wasn't impressive, but the gastronomical impression turned out to be irrelevant anyway, because a few hours later I had D. Now I wonder if, similar to the casein, I had just developed a tolerance for chocolate over the years. I haven't tried any more of it. I suppose I should try it again, just to confirm the initial result, but for some reason or other, I don't seem to crave it.

I am with Tex. I don't seem to crave most of what had been my favorite foods and I think there are 2 reasons:
1. I believe I have a bit of an aversion to the foods after becoming so frighteningly sick from them.
2. I am becoming satisfied with or resigned to using replacements for some foods.

I very much miss eating fruits and veggies in quantity and I miss eating raw fruits and veggies. The difference is that I think that one day I will increase those foods. It seems that my brain has done a good job of giving up on my "heavy hitting" offenders.

Me too, a definite aversion. At my worst I would be running to the bathroom within 15-20 minutes of eating and then over and over again. When I joined here and Tex explained about mast cells, I immediately eliminated everything but meat for about 2 weeks and things quieted down dramatically. Then I added a few things back but I still eat a very limited diet. Since that time all I have to do is think about how I reacted when eating problematic foods and staying away is not a problem. I do get cravings occasionally but I don't act on them. I just tell myself that "I am not my cravings" and they fade away. That said, I do eat a square of dark chocolate a day without problem.

Gloria,

I feel for you. I usually make platters of decorated chocolate covered pretzels to give as gifts. They have always been a favorite, but I decided to stop the tradition this year. I have not figured out what to do instead yet.

Suggestions??

Jean, you are meat alone for two weeks? Nothing else?

Gloria,
any trip the supermarket is my torture, especially in Summer when the scent of all the stone fruits bring back memories....
ignoring the scent, even the colours are tempting with watermelon, mango, peaches, the various melons,

it is the reminder of our self control and sacrifice, how strong and focussed we are about nuturing our body.

I did Deb, ground beef. I was pretty desperate. After eating seemingly anything I would be in the bathroom with watery d which would go on and on unless I took 6 immodium. The immodium only worked until I ate something again. This went on all day and all night. I didn't even feel safe stepping outside with the dog. When I switched to just ground beef things quieted down pretty quickly. That extreme experience was what keeps me on the straight and narrow now. I eat about 15 different foods now. I like knowing I can leave the house. I even managed to take a bus last week when I had to drop my car off to be repaired after I had been rear-ended. I thought I would never step on public transportation again, trains, planes and buses feeling to dangerous. Even though ground beef seemed to be ok during that time, my Enterolab results indicated that I was sensitive to beef so I gave that up too when I got my results and switched to other meats. I'll do just about anything if it means that I am not housebound.

Wow Jean, that sounds awful! Not the beef part. That's a pretty good motivation to make a drastic change. I've been trying to get myself in the mindset of doing something similar but I haven't been willing to commit to it. I've been less and less interested in food the past few months and have almost no interest in eating so it would be an ideal time to figure out what's contributing to my D because lack of variety won't be bothering me.

Gabes,
WATERMELON! My absolute favorite. I could finish one in 2 days. I used to buy 2 a week. They are the hardest in summer. I am glad they are not tempting me right now.

Chocolate - I never liked dark chocolate much, and the ones I did like have soy lecitin, so I haven't it for a long time. When I get a craving badly I make chocolate ice cream, using sold chocolate (Dagoba's), pure vanilla, coconut milk and chocolate butter for the fat and to add chocolatey taste. That usually takes care of it.

Jean - I wish I had the will power to eat ONLY meat for a few weeks, and add in more later. I just cannot commit to it.

Oh Leslie, watermelon is the best. Same as you, easily could eat a whole one by myself in a few days. Too much now gives me D along with just about everything else. Luckily, I still ate it this summer just a couple bites and not every day and I did ok with it. It's an art trying to tame the beast inside that wants to eat half a melon in one sitting. After all, melons are healthy!

Happy Thanksgiving!
