Ten Days on the Road

Post by DJ »

I'm preparing to leave tomorrow for ten days in four hotels. Fortunately, I will have a kitchen for all but two hotel nights. The first M-F is all work and no play near NYC then I meet the hubby and a great niece to drive to VA to see family. I am anxious about exhaustion and food. The exhaustion bothers me as much as the food limitations. My inability to get things done bothers me a lot. I've changed so much, I am wondering if it's depression.

Hi, There are many g-f resturants in the New York city area. Contact the Columbia Celiac Disease Center website for information about g-f resturants. Also Westchester County has a good celiac disease group and while in N.Y attending a conference I contacted them about the g-f resturants in their area. That was ten years ago. There are many more today. Jon

You will be in metropolitan areas. Lots of restaurants, health food stores, super markets. You can always stop at a market and find something to eat. Don't stress about it, you won't starve to death. Stress is your enemy and worry causes stress. I know easier said than done. It's taken a couple of years to get to this point but I just don't eat if there isn't acceptable food. On a trip, carry Lara bars, paleo muffins, almond butter and rice crackers, bananas or other fruit you can eat. On my trip in September I had 3-4 crackers with almond butter before going to breakfast. If there wasn't much I could eat for breakfast, it was okay. I ate a lot of meat and fish.

Relax and enjoy your trip.

The exhaustion is tough on me too....especially not feeling I've accomplished as much in a day as I used to! I hibernate at home, and I don't know that that is a very good thing to do.
It will be good for you to get out...try to enjoy it.
Plan ahead and have lots of safe snacks on hand, and you will do well.
Enjoy and try not stress!

Thank you all for your words of support. The trip went well. I brought food, grocery shopped and ate carefully. Now I have a few days to rest before one more week-long business trip to NYC. The last time I did this trip/task, I took 22 trains/subways in one week. In recent times I have fallen three times in NYC from exhaustion. My agenda has been modified as much as possible to reduce exhaustion.
I have a hotel with a kitchenette and I know where the grocery stores are. I am waaaay to tired at the end of the day for restaurants. Success = no D, getting the job done, and getting home in one piece. bird3:

I'll know that I'm recovering when I start looking for those GF restaurants. I look forward to that. :hungry:

Welcome back. It's good to hear that the trip went so well.

Hopefully, the next one will go just as smoothly.

Thank you, Tex. Being very careful to follow a GF, DF, SF diet and limit fiber is the key :chef:

I just completed my final work trip (NYC) for 2013 and I'm alive and kicking :bear: I modified my very long work hours as much as possible and had a hotel with a kitchen. I stayed with mostly meat and 2 slices of millet bread per day to avoid trouble and it worked quite well. Public transportation from my hotel to the sites I visited took 1.5 hours each way so I could not afford urgent bathroom needs and I didn't have them. As you can imagine, the fear of getting D on a road trip makes it difficult to pack a suitcase.
Now I have a little more time to heal before hitting the road again.

It's great that you didn't have any problems. Obviously you've got your treatment plan pretty much perfected.

Thanks for the update.

I'm impressed! It sounds like you've got the traveling figured out and your diet is working for you.

So happy it worked out well. Success is so hard won.

Do you make your millet bread!

Hi Sheila, I buy the millet bread at a local health food store here in Upstate NY. It's from Sami's Bakery in Florida. It appears that Sami's bread can be ordered on line but I'm not sure if that is county-wide. It's very good bread. http://samisbakery.com/

Thanks DJ. Tampa is across the state and should be a quick shipper to the East coast. Thanks for the link and good luck on your next trip.
