Vegetable juice
If I understand correctly we avoid fruits and vegetables because of the fiber and fructose levels. So if one juices fresh vegetables and discards the fiber or pulp, is the resulting juice ok? Or is there something else in the vegetables that is unhelpful?
It is hard to know the effect of various things for me, because the watery diarrhea continues. But is it possible to get some nutrients from the vegetables or some fruit that wouldn't make the D worse? Or, perhaps more importantly, prevent the gut from healing?
I've been on this limited diet now since mid September. Now my friends are saying, "have you spoken with your DR?" Quite frankly, I'm thinking it wouldn't help me and I don't want to go there. She will just order stronger immune suppresants and tell me there is no dietary component as she did before. What help is that? I don't know if mesalamine is something I should consider, but otherwise, this is my best help>

I guess you missed this:

"Because there is a considerable overlap of symptoms between celiac disease and microscopic colitis, a gluten-free diet often leads to improvement in diarrhea and other symptoms shared by the two disorders."

Hi Darla,
I have been juicing for nutrients but I have found that I can only tolerate small glasses of juice. Too much stimulates a BM for me. YMMV, but I would start with small amounts.
It took me about four months to get real progress with diet and entocort and while I'm off entocort for now, I still have good and bad days. Mostly pretty good. Stick with the diet and don't worry about what your friends (or doctor ) thinks about it.

with Nancy. Some people here say that they don't have any problems with juices, but I've been in remission for over 9 years now, and I still haven't found any fruit or vegetable juice that I can drink more than 5 or 6 ounces of without causing D. As long as I keep the amount low enough, I'm able to handle most juices without any noticeable problems, though. I would definitely avoid any citrus juices (and I still do), including tomato juice.
Mesalamine works for some of us, but for others (mostly those who are sensitive to NSAIDs) it can make the symptoms worse.
It takes a while for the inflammation to settle down, but if you're avoiding all of your food sensitivities, you're healing your way closer to remission every day.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Darla,
I've been thinking about juicing too. I need calcium-rich foods and I would like to add spinach to a juice drink. I'm with Tex on citrus. I can't tolerate citrus juice, even in small amounts.
It's all a delicate balancing act. I recommend getting the D under control first. Are you on a diet very high in meat and low in everything else? I got my D under control be eating close to an all meat diet. Can you eat meat and eggs for breakfast and meat and a small bit of potato for another meal? Can you find millet bread? I tolerate that quite well. Do you like big fat hamburgers on GF bread? Maybe you can slow the D and then have a little veggie juice that can be absorbed after.
Eating a ton of meat took some getting used to for me. I'm an organic gardener. With the advice of my doctor and this site, I ate tons of meat, including bacon and certain brands of hot dogs, and I've come a long way. I eat several veggies but in very small servings and not with every meal. My D is under control (unless I get carried away) so I may try a little juice.
Are you taking a vitamin pill and some vitamin D? I do.
Hang in there!!

Thanks, all, for your feedback. I haven't started juicing and I'm going to cut back on the quantities of even potatoes and carrots or squash or green beans and concentrate on increasing protein.
All in all, this is a very discouraging time for me. I am now down to 5 mg of prednisone on the tapering plan, and the D is intolerable. Friday morning I had to turn around and come back home to clean up before work, and today, i didn't make it from my dining room to my bathroom - and it is not very far. There is no way that I can continue like this, and still work.
Although the steroids didn't allow visits from Norman, in retrospect, it seems it made it more controlable. So, this morning, I took 9mg of budesonide, and I guess I'll talk to the dr. next week. At least I'll have had 3 days then, of budesonide before I have to go to work on Tuesday AM.
The sad thing is I haven't cheated on the diet. I suppose I just need more healing time....
I do so appreciate all the support here. Otherwise, I don't know what I would do. Most GI advice doesn't work for CC.

Darla,
I have found that I cannot eat in the morning. I do have one cup of black coffee with a couple of drops of stevia. I usually have a rice cake, almonds or a small safe muffin that I make about 4 hours after I get up. Then my lunch time at work is a couple hours after that. I used to have mornings like you describe. Now even if I have D - I can get it settled before I go out the door if I don't eat. I usually give myself 2 hrs. on work days. My system seems to settle down later in the morning. Don't know if that helps, I remember feeling the same way you do. Not fun.....hang in there.

Darla,
Been there, done that. I agree with Jean and Christina — more healing will bring improvements. The main thing is to stick to the diet. For some of us, an antihistamine helps when nothing else seems to be adequate.

I most often take benedryl at night to help with sleep and for the antihistamine effect. I have been taking Zyrtec every day too, and for a time I was on ranitidine 150mg twice daily because when I had the upper endo along with the colonoscopy the stomach lining was bright firey red with inflammation. I did not have any symptoms of GERD or indigestion, but the stomach lining was not happy. So I think if antihistamines were going to help me I would be covered. I have been wondering if the ranitidine might be working against me in regards to enough stomach acid for digestion...but I am no expert on this area.
I have been careful on the diet. I remain gluten, dairy, soy, egg, rice and tuna free. I cut back on high histamine foods. All in all, a lot of dietary change, which would be a lot easier if it seemed to make a whit of difference.
Jean, I will try not eating in the morning before I go to work. I already get up at 0430 and leave the house at 0530, but more time would likely help, because once I get through the morning, I am good until evening, (usually) and I am up several times through out the night to run to the bathroom. Good thing I do not feel dizzy when I get up, because I don't spend any time adjusting to postural changes!!
I appreciate everyone's thoughts and ideas. Thank you very much.

I am learning......the hard way. I have had small amts. 4oz. Of soft fruits (fruit cocktail, mandarin oranges) without difficulty after dinner. Yesterday, I had a 15oz can of mandarin oranges. I ate the whole thing....boy did I suffer, the big D, bloated stomach, bad stomach ache. Heating pad on and to bed. Will NOT be doing that again!!!! As people on this site have stated. Amounts consumed do make a difference.

I too have learned about quantity one "oops" at a time. I have not tried mandarin oranges yet because oranges and orange juice don't work for me, even in small quantities. I really want to move forward with more fruits and veggies but my gut sends the message that it's not time yet. I am going from 3 mg to 2 mg of Entocort today. That will likely result in pulling back a bit on fruits and veggies. I tell myself that careful eating may lead to a more tolerant gut over time. Having a diet with more fruits and veggies would sure make things easier.
