Gluten Free or Not?

Celiac and Microscopic Colitis (MS) are two different things, yet I see a lot of people mentioning both together. Can you have MS and not be Celiac? I went out and ordered a GF pizza from Dominos, then posted on a Celiac site that it was great and that there could be contamination, the ingredients were GF, according to Dominos. I pretty much got hammered as why I would take the risk, and that I'm pretty much an idiot. First of all, I don't even know if I'm GF, but if I was its not like I went out and ate a regular pizza. I ate a "GF" pizza, with possible cross-contamination. But this got to think. Why do so many MS sufferers also have Celiac or are gluten intolerant? And if you're just gluten intolerant, does it still cause the same damage a Celiac would get? Because most of the people I talk to acted like all they had to do was touch gluten and they get sick, whereas I can sometimes eat it without a problem.

Didn't I send you a PDF copy of chapter 9 from my book? My records show that I did. Did you read it? The answers to your questions are explained in detail in that chapter. The similarities between the 2 diseases, etc., are discussed in detail.

Please read it (or reread it if you've already read it), because it presents the information in a more organized form, and in much greater detail than I can do here in a brief post on this board.

Have been meaning to get around to it, but I'm also in school so I usually have to put my desired reading materials aside until I can get to them.

However, I did talk to someone on facebook on the Celiac facebook page and they mentioned possible food allergies and how metallic tasting can be a symptom of a food allergy. I will look into that book and read chapter 9 just as soon as I can too.

Jay,
Totally get that your brain is swirling with so much information.

Long story short,
90% of mc'ers have intolerance to gluten. This can range from minor reaction to major reaction.

80% of mc'ers have multiple intolerances/mastcell/histamine issues.....

While ever someone is consuming foods that the are reactive to, there is inflammation and damage to the gut villi.
While ever people are having contact with activities, items that cause inflammation or histamine reaction, there is inflammation and this can affect the whole body, and mostly the gut.

For most, you have totally eliminate the trigger food, if you want to ensure healthy digestion. Being gluten free most of the time may not be god enough....

Hope this helps, unfortunately you can postpone symptoms until you have time, the sooner you put focus into what works for you, the sooner you will feel awesome....
Lots here are working full time, caring for families etc...

Well, IDK but I've been on the GF diet pretty strictly for about a month now, and tonight I ate the GF pizza from the popular restaurant. And hour after consuming it I started have metallic taste again, which I have not had since going GF and eating pizza. So, it's either I'm GF, or I have a wheat allergy or even a possible pizza sauce allergy. I don't know. I know I'm intolerant to soy as well.

Pretty much all gf pizza's from the main stream chains would have soy, dairy, preservatives/sulphides/yeast,
And there is high chance of gluten contamination.

soy would be in the base, and the tomato sauce.

Jay,

Your post reminded me of my contact with a Celiac group. BTW...you can have MC without having Celiac. I have both! I come to this forum for advice/encouragement rather than the Celiac group as this group here is a lot more encouraging and you won't get any name calling. I was called the same thing among other names after I commented that I don't have a GF kitchen...I do still cook some gluten items for my family. And I'm very careful tho with cross-contamination. And I happen to feel better than I have in years. So I'm doing something right. But I will not brave a GF pizza from a restaurant but I do well with 3 restaurants with only one menu item I trust.. one being Red Robin as they are very careful in their kitchen. Most celiacs would be appalled that I go out but I do well with these restaurants and won't deprive myself if I don't react. And I don't react. So I come here to vent, get encouragement, etc., rather than the Celiac sites....they are a tough bunch. NO one should have to put up with name calling. My advice would be to stay away from gluten 100% as it's a high inflammatory food.

And read Tex's book when you can! I need to read it all over again.

There is gluten free pizza which is great because it is offered but for people with MC or CC, the ingredient that often causes the problems is the cheese. It is not because of the lactose but because of the casein (the protein) found in dairy products. The casein causes a lot of inflammation in the colon and I have read that it actually causes the colon to "weep". So I stay clear of gluten as well as all dairy products. For butter, I use clarified butter, which removes the casein and leaves the butter flavor. (Think lobster and what they call "drawn butter).

supplements

I know that it is important to have supplements that are GF/SF/DF and egg free..but do any of you react to the supplement itself? Like for instance..I swear Vitamin D makes me feel sicker..nauseous..tired..could I be intolerant to a vitamin itself? Also, I would love to take a fish oil but think I have fish sensitivity and it seems all fish oil pills (I took a krill one most recently) make me feel bad too..any thoughts on this?

I think I was reacting to a Krill oil supplement in gelatin gelcaps. I switched to liquid cod liver oil (going old-school like my mom made me take as a kid) :smile:

Our reactions are usually to an inactive ingredient or filler, not the vitamin itself. Look for supplements with few or no additives. I use Freeda vitamin D and haven't had any problems. They even make glucosamine that is free from fish. I don't tolerate fish, and it's possible you don't either. Fish is very high in histamines.

Yeah, GF free pizza is a mind field. Tomato ( acid and nightshade ...and probably soy bean oil in the sauce), cheese ( casein), and they are rolling it on and baking it on the same surfaces as the gluten product. I, like some here, don't react right away to a little gluten, but the reaction is cumulative.

If you want fish oil but don’t want fish you can take Chi Omega is is stronger and made from plants.

I have had Domino’s pizza myself and have had no issues, but I am not 100% sure if I need to be Gluten free. I also like Red Robin.

Btw I get the metallic taste some time in my mouth, not sure what thjat is from though.
