Stevia - Mfg in USA

Post by garina »

Dear Friends,

Recently, I have read where 80% of Stevia is manufactured in China, which is scary. I use Stevia, and I understand, it may be the only artificial sweetener that may not kill us! But, now I wonder, since reading that most is produced in China.

Does anyone know of a brand of Stevia that is mfg. in the USA, or any other place that may be safe?

I use Stevia in place of sugar, if needed, usually in hot chocolate (made with Hershey's cocoa and water) and iced green tea. Hot green tea I drink without anything in it, but iced, for me, requires a sweetener.

Thanks for any help.

i am lucky in Aus that there is 5-6 different brands available and they are all aussie made
(also lucky we have good laws about label info, so ALL products have to show basis of ingredients and their origin)

i just did a google search 'american produced stevia' and some valid results came up...
I also did a search on Amazon, unfortunately the product pictures did not show maker and origin.

Hope someone chimes in with a USA produced product for you.

Hi Garina,

I use sweetleaf stevia, box says product of usa (on bottom of box). I can get it at my organic publix (the larger publix store in my area). Smaller publix do not carry it in my area. It is also at my healthfood store. I react to most of the other brands probably due to fillers. www.sweetleaf.com

Gabes,

Thanks, I will continue to check on American produced Stevia, but for some reason, they don't want to list where it actually is being manufactured. Sometimes, I'm noting that it is a US company, but manufactured in China.

Brandy,

Sweetleaf looks promising. I will check our Publix store for that. I appreciate the help.

I have NuNaturals. It is manufactured in Oregon. I went to the site and it had a pesticide report, but it never actually said where it was grown.....perhaps I will email and ask. Interesting.
Everything will be ok in the end, if it's not ok, it's not the end.

So far I haven't found any that doesn't leave me with an aftertaste. I am going to get a plant because I was told the best taste comes from it.

I buy organic stevia from Trader Joe's. It is certified organic by QAI, the international quality assurance organization. Not that certified organic is all that it's cracked up to be. I've considered getting a plant like Lesley. There are instructions online for how to make your own stevia. I may just do this.

I am also interested in a Stevia plant. I didn't know we could grow our own. I definitely will need those instructions online!

Sweetleaf and NuNaturals still look promising, however ... will check.

I wish we had a Trader Joe's here. Marliss, what is the brand name of the one you buy? I had been getting mine from Walmart. Probably a bad mistake, especially since I read where 80% is manufactured in China. Chances are I didn't get the 20% pure!

I've seen stevia plants for sale in my local garden store in the herb section. I wonder if you can just stick a couple of green leaves into a cup of hot tea if it will sweeten things? (Like mint leaves?) I'd be interested in what folks find out.

This is a really good article, going from seeds (what kind, etc.) to how to make the extract and use it.
