from the reading i have done over the past couple of years.
My summary of alot of the studies, Inflammation causes increase of Immune response, and an overactive immune system will over attack where there is inflammation. the bodies ability to heal from the attack is compromised.

Hi Gabes, Thank you for the sites. The first one supports the study about the use of antioxidant foods. A study from France this year found that 54 patients with FSH muscular dystrophy were given four supplements and followed a diet with antioxidant foods. It stopped the progresion and they had a 11% increase in muscle strength. This is the first successful treatment for any of the muscular dystrophies. I have talked to people with FSHD and they had the CRP test and the they all were in the high range. When they lowered the CRP they had more energy and muscle strength. An interesting comment by a MDA patient rep. when I asked her how many people with a dystrophy have G.I issues. She stated "Ninety five per cent". John

WOW - there is the answer hey....when I asked her how many people with a dystrophy have G.I issues. She stated "Ninety five per cent". John
Although there is no single scientific study stating that Inflammation is a toxin, based on the 1000 or so people here and some of the studies done about inflammation IBD's autism etc etc etc. once the immune system gets 'reprogrammed' and starts over attacking the wrong things - Inflammation, Adrenal/Cortisol reactions are a trigger regardless of the condition.
For good healing to occur anywhere in the body, (not just the gut) inflammation has to be minimised, people be calm and relaxed (stress = adrenals)
and of course, the very ironic element: anti inflammatory medications are a BIG no no for IBD's...

Dermatomyositis is closely tied to muscular dystrophy. The groups I belong to are increasingly talking about diet, with the sickest of the bunch poo-pooing any discussions of gluten or anti-inflammatory diets. Many report GI issues, but since most are on heavy-duty immune suppressants, their food reactions are also masked. There are a handful of people who have achieved remission through extreme diet changes, and unfortunately, the remission rarely lasts if they loosen up on the diet. We're talking strict paleo with no sugars, some are vegan. Unfortunately, I think that means healing the gut will not ever "cure" the autoimmune disease. You can only hope to maintain remission by eating an extremely low-allergen, anti-inflammatory diet. Even then, most of them still end up on meds (Plaquenil IVIG, methotrexate, steroids, etc), just less than the SAD diet followers. That tells me that once the immune system is reprogrammed to lose tolerance to self (attack our own tissues), there is no turning back the clock towards cure, you can only hope to minimize the attack. I'm having a hard time accepting this reality. An interesting comment by a MDA patient rep. when I asked her how many people with a dystrophy have G.I issues. She stated "Ninety five per cent"
Incidentally, this was mentioned at a food allergy support group I attend for my daughter... there was a boy with severe anaphylactic food allergies who developed a severe case of mono, Epstein Barr Virus, as a teen. His food allergies completely disappeared after the mono. Now I know mono has strong, lasting effects on the immune system, but WOW!

Zizzle,
This why for mc'ers with multiple conditions at play, that it is important to have realistic expectations of remission, and what remission means...
Agreed, healing does not mean that the immune system is fixed.
Reduction/elimination of the triggers, inflammations etc, is crucial for optimising wellness, wellness being life with minimal symptoms...
