Post by wmonique2 »

Great, Gloria!

Some of these I actually assumed that they weren't GF...like buckwheat...

Thanks for the lesson.

Joefnh

Is that a WINE glass you are holding in your profile picture? Can you tolerate alcohol?
I'd appreciate any suggestions about varieties and brands that you might have. Right
now, In the midst of a flare of lymphocytic colitis, I'm not drinking anything but chamomile
and lime/ginger tea.

I listened to the radio yesterday, a 88 yr old lady holding a PhD in Norwegian food & drinking habits, speaking of the origin of aquavit. I will not repeat all she said, but if you eat something fat and would like to have some alcohol to digest it with, and if you can tolerate potatoes... then Norwegian aquavit is the thing.

I thought I new some about aquavit, but no. Danish and Swedish aquavit is made from corn, but because we didn't have that much corn in my country around year 1100 (the aquavit dates back to year 900), some women found that it worked perfectly to make alcohol from potatoes. (Women!!)

(Also, Norwegian aquavit is aged in old oak barrels which were used to age sherry in, hence the good taste).

I don't know if you can get any Norwegian aquavit around where you live, or if you can tolerate potatoes, but it could be worth a try.

If not, you have learned - as I did - some of the history behind aquavit, and the difference between the two. Norwegian aquavit should be served at room temperature, and sipped to. Danish and Swedish are often served chilled, and are drunk in one shot.

Lilja,

That's a fascinating web site. Thanks. Might just try aquavit someday. Not just yet.

Ditto Lesley and Martha - when I saw Gloria's name pop up, I thought for a minute she was back!!! And then when I looked through the posts and saw all those familiar faces, I realized how much I miss them. I sure hope they are doing OK :xfingers: :xfingers: :xfingers: .

Love,
