Sleep problems?
Do any of you have trouble staying asleep? I take melatonin & 5hTP and get to sleep Ok, but wake up around 3 every morning and can't get back to sleep. Eventually I get up around 5.
This is leaving me exhausted and dragging all day. Any ideas?

I use 5htp. Gives me lots of dreams. Doesn't help me stay asleep, unfortunately. I'm super tired around 7pm or so. Then I get a bit of a second wind for 2-4 hours. Go to bed between 10 and 11, and sleep til 1:30. Then I wake every 2 hours, almost on the nose. Wish I had a solution for you, but I don't. All I can do if tell you you're not alone.
I sometimes have the problem of waking every couple of hours and having trouble getting back to sleep, especially if I get to bed way later than normal.
Currently I'm not having such problems (even if I get to bed late), and I have no idea why. I have a hunch that stress plays a big part in this issue.

My mind floods with everything that going on in my life, when I wake through the night. It's very hard to push those thoughts away and relax, but that's what I try to do. I push them away and concentrate on something peaceful and calming.
Yoga teaches breathing techniques that you can do to help you get back to sleep, too.

Thanks everyone...I do try several breathing exercises, but often doesn't work. Turned clock around, made bedroom black, ....Everything seems to point back to stress for me... I think that's gotta be more of a focus, not just what I eat or don't eat.
Last night I took another melatonin at 1:30 when I woke up and then slept till 8! Got up , ate breakfast, still tired, went back to bed & slept for another 1&1/2 hours. I've never done that unless I had the flu.
A friend told me this level of exhaustion suggests adrenal exhaustion....she's a very good friend who is forthright as well as caring. Her suggestion is to start taking care of myself for a change...hmmm... What a concept!

Sunny,
Adrenal fatigue is certainly a possibility, but that pattern of regular exhaustion is also very typical of active MC. It takes all the energy that our body can muster just to fight the inflammation in our digestive system (and possibly in many other areas of the body).
And your friend is certainly right that you have to take care of yourself in order to facilitate your recovery.

sleep problems
Let me join this chorus. I used to have the problems everyone has until I was prescribed elavil (10mg) for calming the gut and the mast cell issue I suffer from. Knocks me flat out. The best sleep I ever had. I sleep 9 hours. I'll stay on it even if they tell me tomorrow that I am cured from MC.

Tex, my daughter suggested the same thing yesterday, that the exhaustion is due to the energy required for healing. Thanx for seconding that! That was a new concept for me. I've been so sick for so long, it makes sense. And I am making more of an effort to take care of myself, not always easy to do..
Lori, wish I could have that glass of wine!
Monique, I'll ask my PA about that dosage... Sounds like a good med to try.

Sunny,
Sticking with a low inflammation, easy to digest meals help.
I also have my main meal in the middle of the day, and small serve light meal or protein shakeof a night, this helps me to sleep better
Be wary of the wine, if you are trying to heal it is high inflammation, and histamine trigger.
Once healing is happening, and we get energy and focus, the brain fog has cleared, .. We don't want to ingest anything that will take that away..
