question about healing
Hi all!
I have been on the slow path to healing due to many many food sensitivities. I eat about 6 different foods successfully. I recently added betaine HCL, and Vit D3 to my daily intake, with success.
My question is....I seem to have plateaued in healing. My stools are better now (not normal yet), and happen usually twice in the morning. The bloating/gas are much better, but I tried a yellow potato last night, and I'm having a reaction to it today. It was 1+ on Enterolab, and I thought I could have it twice a week now, but no go!
Is there a time to start probiotics again to help my gut get balanced? Or, do I continue the path with my limited diet. I couldn't take the probiotics 6 months ago as they caused more issues.
Suggestion, please.

introducing any new ingredient will likely cause a reaction the first time you have it..
post MC, and after healing our gut is a bit like a babies digestion when it is transitioning from milk to solids. Any new ingredient will cause D the first time you ingest it
my recommendation when introducing new foods is to have a small portion one day, wait 24 hours, have another small portion on day 2, wait 24 hours and then have it again on day 3. if you still have D after the 3rd time, then it might a food that you cant have.
be patient.
the same with pro-biotics. the only way to know if your gut is ready is to try them. Dont judge the outcome on the first intake... give it a couple of goes
there is no mathamatic, or scientific formula that will indicate when the time is right...
This is where listening to your body becomes the guide/indicator...
hope this helps

Gabes,
Yes, your advise does help me! I just doesn't understand where I get the bloat/cramping/pain from sometimes, as I thought it was a reaction the potato, but now I'm not so sure as it happened 20 hours later.
I didn't get D. I could feel, after lunch, a fullness, then as the afternoon went on I have noises in my digestive tract, little pains & cramping, bloating. That happened twice this past week.
I have a bit through the night, then after I use the bathroom in the morning it gets better.

Linda, figuring this whole thing out is so hard sometimes. After months, I was somewhat healed, but the journey was far from over. Neither was the investigative work. I'M TWO YEARS this month and STILL testing foods and quantities of foods. D isn't the only indicator of your gut not liking something. ….like with me and tomato sauce. I get pain and intestine inflammation ( for days), but no D. I don't try any more with pasta sauce…. but I am fine with enchilada sauce when I eat Mexican. Go figure. I'm just happy I can eat Enchiladas ( no cheese)!
I have also found that quantity matters with many foods. I never mess with the gluten, dairy, or soy, but I found that I can eat small quantities of things I thought I couldn't eat at all. The thing is that you have to be pretty stable to do any testing.
Probiotics have always made things worse for me. I don't think I will ever try them again. But some here take them. Do you take antihistamines? Helps with tremendously. Didn't figure that out until a few months ago.
Slow and steady. Patience.
take care
Leah

Leah,
I did take Allegra & Benadryl. They were slowing down my gut, and causing unpleasant symptoms, that went away shortly after stopping them. If I get the morning queasy histamine effect I sometimes get in the morning, I will take 1/2 for relief, but haven't taken them regularly as I was once doing.
Tex had said once that sometimes when your gut is healing you get aches & pains as it's restructuring itself. Maybe that's my current issue. Maybe I am anxious due to baking for everyone else for the holidays and not being able to partake in anything again....who knows.
Everything I read talks about probiotics being so important. I took them faithfully for years, but still wound up where I am now!

Linda,
FWIW, I cut gluten out of my diet permanently, over 11 years ago, and for almost a year and half, I experimented with cutting other foods out of my diet. My symptoms were always alternating, so for most of that time, I was reacting on sort of a cyclic schedule. Then I decided to cut out everything that seemed to bother me, and within a couple of weeks, I was in remission. That is to say, my pattern of cyclic reactions was drastically altered.
However, I still got sick now and then, and I still had various symptoms that followed the ingestion of certain foods, but didn't necessarily lead to D. As time went on, and healing progressed, the symptoms occurred less frequently. I followed that very restrictive diet for about a year and a half. During that period, from time to time (maybe once a month or two) I would challenge myself with certain foods (one at a time) to see if I could tolerate them. It never worked, until I had been following the diet for a year and a half, and at that point I was able to successfully slowly reintroduce corn into my diet. My take on this is that it took that long for significant healing to take place. This was over 3 years after I had adopted the GF diet.
I'm just guessing, but I have a hunch that you mostly need more healing time.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks, Tex.
My joint pain continues, but all other symptoms have faded. I was trying a veggie, here and there, in very small amounts. That still isn't working. So, I just eat meat & arrowroot biscuits, basically. I can have a little coconut, sunflower seed butter, and a teff flour waffle. That's it.
I guess I just need to stay the course for now. Darn this disease. Giving up fruit and veggies is so drastically different to the way I've lived my life, all these years. I guess when I feel good for 5 days at a time, I shouldn't assume I am at the point where I can reintroduce foods again.
Patience and perseverance.
Thank you!

Yes, my joint pain waxed and waned for a long time while I was recovering. IMO that's a sign that the leaky gut is a very persistent symptom, and can take a long time to heal for some of us. As long as intestinal permeability remains a problem, food sensitivity restrictions cannot be relaxed (again, IMO).
5 days of feeling good is definitely a good sign, but I agree that it may be statistically insignificant as far as the overall time span of one's recovery is concerned.
You're very welcome.

Tex,
That makes sense to me.
Another article popped up today regarding healing:

I guess I'm always looking to improve, with whatever knowledge I can absorb, but sometimes too much info can be confusing.
Thanks for the advise and Merry Christmas!

You know, there must be some element of truth in the claim that probiotics are helpful for digestion/food sensitivites/healing, etc., but they sure don't work worth a hoot for most people who have MC. They do seem to help a very small percentage of MC patients though, and those individuals are often very vocal, and active in promoting the treatment.
That trend toward advocacy by the minority makes me wonder if the same situation exists with all the other claimed benefits of probiotics. IOW, I wonder if they help a small percentage of users, but those users are for whatever reason, strong advocates of the concept and so a minority of users keep the concept alive and thriving because of their enthusiasm, while the vast majority of users derive no benefit, but mostly keep quiet about it, so their vote is rarely heard in the on-going probiotics promotion campaign. And of course the placebo effect is so powerful that most people are reluctant to buck the trend and claim that a product is not helpful, unless it makes them as sick as a dog, because they worry that it might be somehow helping them but they are just not aware of it.
Personally I believe that we are probably a hundred years or more away from the day when medical science will understand gut bacteria well enough to be able to design a probiotic product that is truly beneficial for a majority of users. These days, they are disguising guesswork as useful products, and promising something that they can't possibly deliver to anyone but a select few.
Merry Christmas Linda, and as always, you're very welcome,
Tex

Hi Linda -
I didn't read where anyone else responded to a comment you made, so I'd like to. You said you are baking for others but of course not eating any of it yourself.
I believe in many, if not all, cases where people are gluten sensitive baking for others with gluten flours can easily contaminate everything in our kitchens.
Just a thought that you may be getting glutened even if you are not eating it.
I agree with others when they say you have to be pretty stable before you can really see if any newly introduced foods are okay for you. I have been GF/DF/SF for almost 2 years, and I have seen the most improvement and digestion stability only within the last 6 weeks. The healing began early on when going GF/DF/SF, but when looking back I see where I progressed for a period of time, then seemed to stop (for awhile), and then more improvement, and the cycle continued. It was too confusing for me to see what I was reacting to until things became more stable.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas.
Paula

Hi Paula!
Thanks for the response. I don't have any gluten in my house. All the baking I have been doing was gluten free baking.
I am so happy to hear that you have been seeing real progress! Hallelujah!
Merry Christmas to you, too!
Tex,
I know that I can't take probiotics anymore, for whatever reason, I may never know.....the only supplements I can take right now are Vit D and HCL. I'll just keep the course! :)
