If you do, I would love to know what you have learned or are doing about it? Any meds, tests? Thanks

I know I had it early in my mc journey (it's the oiliness that floats in the toilet bowl after a bm). It has become much better with time, though, so I do not worry about it anymore.

I have fat malabsorption as dertermined by a comprehensive stool test. I would also like to know what I should be doing. I supplement with vit D, but should we be testing and supplementing all fat soluable vitamins? I hate the effect on hair, skin and teeth.

Hi mcnomore,

I did a fecal fat malabsorption test through Enterolab when I had my food allergies tested. According to them, anything above 300 units suggests malabsorption, and I had 566 units.

It was when I was reacting the most that I took this test, so I'm not sure if it was just the D, but with reacting to gluten for so long, I'm sure I do have it.

I'm just not worrying about it for now while I heal and aim for remission. At some point in the future I will do another round of testing with enterolab.

I can't stand my GI, so I see him as little as possible.

Nancy

PS: wanted to add that shortly after receiving my enterolab results, I did a comprehensive blood panel through my GP and my vitamin D level was 35 & my vitamin B12 was 460. Both "normal" range but I cannot speak as to accuracy of the test.

I do supplement Vitamin D to get that number up.

Hope this helps.

My G.I.doc is from India and he says that after a fatty or heavy meal they sit in the sun to draw the fat out of their body. I have read this elsewhere.

Are all of you fat free, low fat, if so, what fats do you eat?

Hi,

I don't have fat malabsorption, rather I had brain/memory issues from not enough fat (at age 51.)

I have coconut oil--spectrum extra virgin--it has a neutral flavor and does not taste like coconut, extra virgin olive oil from California (to prevent adulteration), ghee http://www.pureindianfoods.com/paleo-di ... -a/260.htm
I buy the ghee on line. It has no natural flavorings and I've had no problem with it. Any ghee that is sold locally has natural flavoring and natural colors. And fourthly I eat avacodos. It took awhile before I could tolerate ghee---early on with this disease I could not.

I forgot to mention I also use bacon fat in cooking when I think to use it. I use the other four fats much more frequently.

I no longer eat Earth Balance soy free spread. I really liked the taste but it was causing severe brain issues/ anxiety issues. I think it has way too many ingredients for me. I do much better with the above four listed fats.

I used to be on a low fat diet but my cholesterol was almost 300. Decided that wasn't working at all so I ditched low fat foods and my cholesterol dropped 100 points. My doc asked what I did; when I told him, he was stunned. He told me not to tell his other patients. That was a couple years ago but I haven't asked him yet if he's changed his mind. I'm back to regular butter and even use lard at times for baking chicken.

Never heard about sitting in the sun to pull out fats. If nothing else, it will help with Vitamin D levels.

I don't have any trouble eating fat. In fact I do best on a diet that is high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbs. I only use extra virgin olive oil and organic cold pressed coconut oil.
