Start entocort again?

Post by MvdH »

Hi,

A month ago I thought (after being gluten and dairy free for 9 months with perfect results:)) that I should test if I really, really can't eat them. Well, guess what..worst idea ever, cause after two days it all started again. A week later it was kind of ok..but then, when I was in Spain for a project and had to join the Lord's supper in a church I already took a piece of bread and put in my mouth before I realised that that was a really bad idea. Didn't dare to spit it out...and since that time (like 3 weeks) i'm back on D. Exactly that same time jointpain in my hands started as well..which was so much that I couldnt work for a couple of days (m interpreter Sign Language..and my hands are kind of important for that case;)).

So..I started to think about go on entocort again for maybe 1 or 2 weeks. But..m not sure if I should wait a little bit more till it'll maybe heal by it self..at the other hand, i'm afraid that when I'll wait to long it only get worser and more difficult to go back to remission.

Do you maybe have advices?!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mariska,

How long had you been off entocort when this happened? Does your doctor have any ideas?

You could try narrowing your diet to mostly eating meat and see if that calms things down. That works for me to some extent.

I hope you feel better soon.

Mariska,

Entocort does not help with healing. In fact, corticosteroids actually retard healing. They do mask the symptoms though, so in some cases they allow us to work when we might not be able to work, otherwise. That is their main advantage — they suppress symptoms while diet changes heal the gut.

As Nancy suggested, keeping your diet extra bland (and extra safe) while you are recovering, may help you to recover faster. Make sure that while your intestines are inflamed, nothing in your diet contains any traces of the foods that cause you to react, and minimize fiber and sugar, so that the inflammation will decay as fast as possible.

If you had been in remission for many months before this happened, then you should be able to recover within a week or 2. If you had not been in remission very long, then it may take longer for you to recover. And people who wean off Entocort too rapidly (without a long process of slowly tapering the dosage over several months) tend to relapse within a few weeks after ending the Entocort treatment. That's why Nancy asked how long you had been in remission. If you had only been off Entocort for only a few weeks when this happened, then it might be necessary for you to start over with the Entocort treatment.

Good luck. I hope that you recover quickly. And please let us know how long it takes you to recover this time, because quite a few members eventually wonder if they are "cured", and they do the same thing that you did, and end up in a flare. Yes, this disease lasts for life, so we have to remain vigilant with our diet at all times.

Thanks for both your reactions..!!

I've been in remission since July. Ironic enough that happend when I was in Ghana (also the place were it all started;)). Had the diagnosis in Februari this year and started with Entocort/budenoside. Didn't work out so the dr. made me to start with prednison..and when that didnt work as well I'd to take Imuran. Didn't eat gluten or dairy by that time..but actually, i'm kind of n vegetable-junk so maybe all the fibres were the reason I didnt heal. Then..two weeks before Ghana I decided to stop with all that stupid medicines and had some supplements from a alternative dr. (olive-extract, kurkuma and beetroot). In Ghana I only eat rice-cakes (brought them from home), groundnutpaste, bananas, mango en rice..and after 3 days I felt better and didnt had any problems anymore. Spent there four weeks on this diet..and back home I was able to eat everything (even all the vegetables, fruits and nuts).
Till now;)!

So..yes..maybe I should try my Ghanian-diet again. But I dont know..not eating vegetables feels not good..and I do have a slowjuicer. That means no fibers, right? Or is it better to avoid all vegetables for n while?

Thanks for your advice..also about the Entocort. Don't feel anything to start with that medicines again, but I thougt, if thats the only option..But clearly it's not..

Hi Mariska,
Juicers are nice but be careful if you have fallen back to D. Increase your meat intake and reduce your fruit and veggie intake. Go back to the basics of early recovery.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Diet choices are your best option. I am tapering off entocort but sometimes have no choice but to bump it up if I'm having difficulties because I get to a point where nothing else helps. I always get nervous when the grumbles and noises start because that leads to WD and possibly night issues. It hasn't happened in a long while so it's a good feeling.

Joint pain in the hands/fingers is a bad thing if you're an interpreter. I used to be an interpreter for the deaf for about ten years several lifetimes ago. I was always protective of my wrists. At the time I wore braces at night to keep my wrists in a neutral position while I slept in hopes of warding off carpel tunnel. Not sure if it helped or not but I remember having a few flares during my time working in school- made for a long day.

It sounds like you can do this with diet. I know what you mean when you say it doesn't "feel right" to not eat vegetables, but it is right for now….. or you can just stick to squashes and carrots for now. They are the safest.
feel better soon.
