Magnesium re-visited

Post by sunny »

Been searching the archives re: magnesium citrate & glycinate... Tex did you decide to stay on the glycinate or go back to citrate? I've been reading about supplements that help the heart & low magnesium can lead to arrhythmias like Atrial Fibrillation & Flutter. The author suggests the glycinate form, while I've been using the citrate form (Calm)....
On Amazon a response stated that the glycinate form contains magnesium stearate which the body does not absorb well, and she preferred magnesium threotomine...

I was satisfied with the Calm, and now am not so sure...I do tolerate it with no intestinal upset, and I seem to have a calmer heart rate when I take it.... So what is your take on the glycinate form now that some time has gone by?

I usually order several bottles at a time, so I'm still using the magnesium glycinate. I may go back to the magnesium citrate when I finish, because I have several bottles of it on hand, also. I still have to use 800 mg (2 - 400 mg tablets) of magnesium glycinate in order to get the same level of cramp control that I get with 400 mg of magnesium citrate. Why, I have no idea, because magnesium glycinate is a chelated form of magnesium that tends to provide the highest levels of absorption and bioavailability.

That Amazon responder is confused. Magnesium glycinate products contain the labeled amount of magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate (for example, the ones I am using contain 400 mg of magnesium glycinate). Magnesium stearate is listed under OTHER INGREDIENTS. I'm not sure why it's in there, but it is not included as a source of magnesium, because it is not listed as an active ingredient.

Magnesium stearate is an additive in many supplements of all sorts because it acts as an anti-clumping agent and helps in the production of the supplements, not for its magnesium content. It is a supposedly safe additive but there seems to be some controversy in this regard. You can get stearate free magnesium glycinate from Pure Encapsulations.

Thanx, Tex & Jean...I've seen Magnesium Stearate in many of my supplements and wondered at her comment about the body not handling it. I think her concern was that it is in there... I've wondered if it caused any of my reactions from other supplements I take.
It seems that the mag citrate seems to be helping so prob. Will stay with it for a while.
Appreciate the discussion.
