Looking to gain weight while dealing with MC

Looking to gain weight while dealing with MC

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. I have been dealing with MC for 4 years come May 2014. It has been a long journey and practically a new life for me. I was 32 when diagnosed as I went from 160 to 130 in weight within the first year. I lost 30 pounds and I was already slim for a 5'8 male.

I am looking to re-create my self confidence by not being so slim and looking to put on weight.

I was looking at the CB1 pill for weight gain but I am scared to try it.

I wanted to know if anyone could offer any insight possibly with trying this or something else to add more weight.

Its is so difficult for me to gain weight and now that my diet is GF, dairy- free, egg free, soda-free & caffeine free, it has become even harder.

I really want to get my body in a place were I am more confidant. Thanks

Hi,

I know nothing about any CB1 pill, but I would be afraid to rely on a pill to provide weight gain. Why not use real food, instead?

Are your MC symptoms under control? If MC was the original cause of your weight loss, then control of the symptoms (IOW, establishing remission) is necessary in order to allow weight gain (because nutrient malabsorption is a problem whenever MC is active). Not everyone loses weight because of MC, but those who do, must control their symptoms in order to regain their weight. Usually that happens naturally as we heal, and our digestion efficiency improves. If you are on a paleo diet, it will take much longer to reach your original weight.

If you're in remission, and not on a paleo diet, then you can do what feedlot livestock do (under the supervision of a farmer or ration manager/nutritionist) — you can eat a diet with adequate protein, adequate fat, and all the carbs from grain that you can stand. Farmers don't feed corn to animals because they have a surplus of it and they want to get rid of it — they feed it because it's the most efficient way to put weight on livestock. By "efficient", I mean fast, effective, and economical. I'm not promoting this as the healthiest way to gain weight — I'm just suggesting that it's a fast and effective way to gain weight, if that's your goal.

Or, you can probably gain weight by continuing to eat your current diet, but increasing the quantity. The secret to gaining weight is to eat enough nutrient dense foods to satisfy our needs, and then eat some more. The more we eat, the faster we gain.

Be sure that you eat enough protein and fat to expedite good health and continued healing and muscle development, otherwise you will predominantly gain fat from the extra carbs.

When I was trying to gain back some weight I'd lost, I tried to incorporate plenty of protein, good fats (avocado, full-fat coconut milk, coconut oil, olive oil) and a little more carbs (squash, sweet potato). I did get back to a more normal weight, although I don't know how much of that can be attributed to my gut starting to heal and how much was adding in more of those foods. I'm guessing a little of both.

Like Tex said, it depends on what you can eat. Rice cooked in Coconut milk is yummy and filling. Corn and potato chips if you can handle it. Carbs will definitely do it… if you can eat them without flaring. Like Kristen said, lots of healthy fats from avocados, coconut milk/cream, higher fat meats…etc. Eat more and more often. That should do it ( of course unless you are still having D)

Aside from all the great tips the others gave I made myself a smoothie everytday. Almond milk, coconut ice cream, frozen bananas, frozen strawberries, hemp seeds, Vega protein powder. It did help me put my weight back on. I still make the smoothie, but have cut out the ice cream.

Hi,
Since my D stabilized I have gained back all of the weight I lost and then some. Prior to my illness I was an organic gardener with a diet high in veggies and a I was a power walker. I loved being on the move. At this point I burn fewer calories by far and I am able to eat certain very high calorie foods without difficulty. Early in my recovery I began eating bacon and lots of it. I found very good millet bread in a local health food store that I use for hamburgers. Homemade baked french fries work great for me and I make mashed potatoes with coconut milk and special margerine. I can eat large quantities of certain brands of potato chips and tortilla chips without a problem. Some stores have GF pancake mixes. Sweet potatoes are good too. I have GF Chex with rice milk and bananas as a snack or for breakfast. Some chocolate bars don't contain offenders. I recently found powdered rice protein in a health food store. It was with the body building stuff. I have not tried it but I'm betting it would make a nice smoothie. I've roasted a few turkeys lately. I make gravy with corn starch. I can easily find sausage without offenders for spaghetti and sausage. Quinoa, rice, and corn pastas are all nice if they are not overcooked.
I'm glad put this in writing. It explains why I'm blowing up like a balloon :shock:
I hope you are able to tolerate these foods too.

Thanks everyone for all of your comments and support! All the ideas sound great I am going to try the shakes potatoes and other suggestions. I even found a vegan ice cream! So now all I have to do is put a plan together and include these things in my diet.

My symptoms are under control only in I maintain a certain diet. Prior to becoming GF my diet consisted of lots of bread and dairy products that I have now eliminated from my diet. This is why I lost the 30 pounds.

My new diet does have its advantages as I make healthier food choices and am aware of things that I used to never take into consideration.
