antibiotic misery

Post by rachdemots »

I have been taking 5 days of Augmentin for a hideous sinus infection that was flaring my asthma..sinuses feel a bit better but my intestines are hard as a rock and hurt and diarrehea is back with a vengeance..any suggestions how to survive the next five days on the antibiotic and beyond?

I'm sorry that you are not feeling well. I know people have mixed reviews on probiotics but if I take antibiotics, I will take probiotics along with the antibiotics. Antibiotics are hard on gut flora.

I wish I had an answer. Most antibiotics will do this to us and as long as you take them, I don't think you will get better. Hopefully you can hang in there until you are done with the drugs and then eat as cleanly as possible.
Hope you feel better soon.

Augmentin is what started my LC. I needed it for a sinus infection a year ago. I am now taking the z-pak for bronchitis, and having problems too. I think we just have to ride it out. I hope you feel better soon.

Rachel,

I'm sorry that you needed to use an antibiotic. While I don't classify conventional probiotics as a suitable treatment for MC, I do agree that a probiotic would be advisable following an oral antibiotic treatment, especially if the antibiotic used is Augmentin. Augmentin is one of the higher-risk antibiotics for leading to a C. diff infection, and preventing a C. diff infection is much, much easier than getting rid of one after it develops.

Have you tried a Neti Pot treatment for sinus problems? Not only do most people who try it find it to be extremely effective at clearing out sinus congestion, but it's extremely good for preventing sinus infections. And in many/most cases it can resolve an infection, by clearing the sinuses and helping them to drain. It's best to use either the commercial saline product, or distilled water to make your own saline solution, in order to minimize any risk of introducing bacteria or other problems.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
