Coconut oil is great but I haven't been saving it for reuse. I'll definitely give it a try.

Tex, one problem you might encounter is a "fishy" taste to the oil used to fry your catfish. If you only fry fish it probably wouldn't matter.

Have been babysitting grandchildren for 10 days and haven't had time to visit the board. Taking care of a 10 and a 6 year-old and two dogs just about wore me out. Glad to be back.

I'll bet that's true. I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks,
Tex

I am sure it did Sheila, but what a joyful cause of being worn out! When I get to Israel I have an intense month with the grandkids. I would love to spread all that time over a year and it would be perfect!

Leslie, I make any gluten free bread mix, for my husband, and use that for breading. We even stuffturkeys with croutons made from rice flour bread. Bob's Red Mill Really Wonderful bread has garbanzo bean flour (and other flours) so it is a bit more nutritious, than just rice flour breads, but it depends on your food sensitivities.

Tex, I use coconut oil every day. When I am baking, if I melt too much, I do put it back and it solidifies right away....of course I live in Pennsylvania, where the low last night was -5....so, you're dry out west and we're frigid here int he east.... :(
I also use it as a moisturizer on my skin, have made toothpaste with it, and use it for homemade deodorant. It is so versatile.

coconut oil for frying

Post by wmonique2 »

Chef Tex!

Never used it for frying, just sauteed vegies in it...might try it for fish now that you say it's good.

In regular frying oil if you re-use it, you only lose the lecithin. Not sure about coconut oil.

I do however use it for my hair, feet..great for many things.

Pat, thanks for the deodorant tip. I've discontinued regular deodorant and am trying the natural mineral salts. It's different but I've become a bit paranoid since I had my thyroidectomy. I will have to give it a try along with using it as a moisturizer. My skin has been so dry and flakey lately. Is it too heavy to use on the face?

Deb, I've been using coconut oil on my face for a few years. It feels heavy at first but after a while you adjust and it feels great.

Bear in mind that for frying, you have to use refined coconut oil which has a higher smoke point, somewhere around 425 degrees, I think. If you use virgin expeller-pressed coconut oil, the smoke point is 350 degrees. Since all I have is the virgin stuff, I have switched to palm oil shortening for frying which has a smoke point of 450 degrees. If you exceed the smoke point for your oil it breaks down and produces all sorts of bad stuff.

I have a heart issue which causes arrhythmia but it has stopped/reduced tremendously the past 2 weeks the only thing I can point out is the coconut oil I've been using on everything instead of olive oil maybe it does clean out the body from allergens or something or it may be the low omega 6 profile. It may have helped or maybe coincidence anyways, it's really good stuff , I love it and will use it forever it seems.

I recommend to try coconut oil on everything for those suffering some inflammation in the body for sure ! Especially unrefined !
