Just wondering

Post by Nancy »

I was on Entocort for 2 months. When my 2 months were up on Jan. 6 I continued to do fine. Then yesterday the D started again. My doctor did not want me to wean off Entocort when I asked about that although I know it is recommended her. Now I am contemplating whether to call the doc regarding the return of D or maybe first try some antihistamines instead. What do you experts recommend? I am off gluten, egg, dairy and soy. Also rice and almonds, corn and oats.

Hi Nancy,

We don't have enough experience with using antihistamines to treat MC symptoms to be able to predict with confidence whether or not it will work in your particular situation. We know this much: if it's going to work, it will typically bring significant improvement within a day or 2. So you wouldn't waste much time trying it. If it doesn't seem to help within a couple of days, then it's probably time to resort to the Entcort.

At least, that's the way that I would view your options if I were in that particular situation.

In my strictly unprofessional opinion, it's certainly worth trying. Please keep us posted on whether or not it worked for you, if you should decide to try it.

Thanks Tex. I went and picked up some generic antihistamine of the loratadine, 10mg strength. The box says to take one tab every 24 hours. Do you say that would be sufficient or should I take 1 morning and night?

I would play it by ear. If my symptoms seemed to increase before my next treatment, I might try a second one at the end of the day, or at bedtime. Some members here take a Benedryl at bedtime, because it also helps them to sleep better.

Good luck Nancy. I think that you just weren't on the Entocort long enough and stopped it too abruptly. All of us here who have had success getting off the drug were on it at least 4 months and weaned slowly off of it.
I'm one of those people who found antihistamines to help. I take an Allegra in the am and a Benadryl at night. When I know I am going out or eating something that could be trouble, I will also take an H-2 antihistamine which helps tremendously ( but I don't want to take it all the time because it also reduces stomach acid)

I had a lot of D yesterday so make myself some chicken soup. That will be my new diet along with bananas and applesauce for a few days. Also took a antihistamine morning and night and some Immodium as needed yesterday. I was much improved this morning, loose but not D. Tracking this as I go along. I did put a call into the doctor's office yesterday and talked to the nurse. She was going to talk to the doctor and get back to me. So I'll see if he'll taper me off the Entocort or not. Otherwise I'll return to detective mode as I go off the soup. I'm off all my known offenders from my Entero Lab testing so there must be something I'm eating that is bothering me yet.

Sugar can be a problem, so your bananas and applesauce may not be the best solution….. but that's just a guess. We are all so different when it comes to all the "other" foods that aren't so obvious. Hope you get your answers soon.
