Concerned That Your LDL Levels Are Too High? Read This.

Post by tex »

Hi All,

If this doesn't knock your hat in the creek it's probably glued on. The results of a new study show that patients dealing with heart failure (which probably applies to all of us, in the long run) live longer when their LDL cholesterol level is higher. And they die sooner, when their LDL level is lower.

Now this study was confined to subjects diagnosed with heart failure, but I have little doubt that if the same study were done on subjects in the same age group from the general population, the results would almost certainly be similar. In fact, I'm beginning to wonder it the same might not be true for subjects from any age group.
Conclusion: Low LDL-[cholesterol] levels are association with a reduced survival in elderly patients with clinically controlled moderate and severe [heart failure]. Statins were independently and significantly associated with a higher risk of mortality.
Low Levels of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol: A Negative Predictor of Survival in Elderly Patients with Advanced Heart Failure

The study certainly illustrates why statins are contraindicated for anyone who has heart failure. Here's what Dr. Briffa has to say on the topic:

Statins associated with increased risk of death in those with heart failure

Yes, and about a year ago there was a study showing that people who take supplement have a shorter life span. I don't know whether to sit or roll over :dog:

Wow. I don't know what to do with this info. My husband takes statins ( as does his whole family) because they all produce too much cholesterol. Mine is naturally low….. does that mean I am destines to die of heart failure?

Cholesterol Clarity by Jimmy Moore is a fantastic resource as well! He interviewed (and quoted) a ton of doctors, but it's written in a really accessible way.

Leah,

High cholesterol levels during early and middle age do indeed carry a risk of adverse cardiovascular events. That situation reverses somewhere around 60 years of age or so. IOW, if cholesterol doesn't kill you by then, it becomes your friend.

I doubt that early mortality will be a problem with your conditioning.

concerned that your LDL levels...

My two cents: I know a couple of doctors that refuse to take them even though their LDL levels are high. I won't take them and they keep shoving them down my throat and I keep refusing (not high, around 190 but I have diabetes).

Doctors keep prescribing them because that's the protocol and everybody else does it. They are not independent thinkers. They all have the same sheep herd mentality. Statins are some of the most prescribed meds in this country. My friend Edna is 80 and she's been prescribed statins. Huh?

We don't really know whether this generation will seriously decrease their risk for heart attack or not. Do we?
