Invisible Disabilities support site

Post by carolm »

Hi All,
I tripped across this website of a group called IDA-- Invisible Disabilities Assoc. Their mission is to offer support to persons who are battling chronic illnesses but who are misunderstood because 'they look good'. They've written pamphlets aimed at helping family members to understand how it feels to have a life altering condition and hopefully bridge the gap between family members and the person whose battling an illness. I thought someone here might find it helpful.

Carol,

That appears to be a good, down-to-earth website.

Thanks for the link.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Well, I'll be darn...My entire life I've heard people say that they couldn't believe I had a chronic disease because I looked like "the picture of health". Even when I was hospitalized I couldn't get any sympathy because I "looked too good to be sick".

Now that I have 2 chronic diseases and a website for people like me, you think we'll get some sympathy?

Tex, Monique and all-- I thought it looked down-to-earth too. It looks to me like the founders are persons with chronic illnesses who found the everyday struggles included dealing with other's perceptions. I found this article relevant and I'll bet many others will too. It's called "Why Don't They Just Take Something?" and the gist is that if you are still sick then you must not be following your doctors orders, because doctors understand and can fix everything right?
