Strontium Ranelate VS Strontium Citrate

Post by DJ »

I understand that Strontium Ranelate is the prescription form of strontium available in Europe and that Strontium Citrate is what's available here as a nutritional supplement. Studies show that Strontium Ranelate is helpful but distorts bone density study results in that Strontium Ranelate is absorbed into the bone and reflects as increased density in a similar way to calcium. The Studies of the effectiveness Strontium Ranelate subtract out a certain amount of the increase in bone density reflected on x-rays to account for the increased presence of strontium in the bone.
Does anyone know how all of this would apply to the nutritional supplement Strontium Citrate? How much of an increase in bone density would be need to reflect actual bone improvement and not only strontium accumulation in the bone?
I fear that I already know the answer. I fear that the answer is....we don't know because there is no research money for an inexpensive non-patented nutritional supplement. I hope there is some method of measuring the usefulness or harm of this supplement. I would really like to push back against osteoporosis and the current prescription medications in the USA come with a lot of risk.
Thanks.

I found one strontium blog where some doctors are actually telling patients to go ahead and try strontium citrate while others are advising patients not to try it because they don't know what they are taking. I've spoken to a couple of pharmacists who are not up on the issue. I bought strontium citrate but I think I'll gather a little more information before taking it. I will see my GYN next month. I'll bring it up with him too.

I saw my gynecologist this week. I told him I was there to follow up on a bone density study they ordered in August. My gyn informed me that gynecologists no longer order bone density studies because they are interpreted differently now. He said "some of the people we were treating didn't need treatment and others who were not treated did need treatment" and he said his secretary would set up an appointment with an endocrinologist for me.
I asked him if he was familiar with strontium and he said; "No. What is it?" Well, at least he was interested in hearing about it. I will ask the endocrinologist in May.
There is a 2013 study in Europe showing a relationship between strontium ranalate and serious heart disease. The prescription drug now has limited use for very severe cases of osteoporosis.

I will try to step up getting off Entocort, continue working on improving my diet, and I will see the endocrinologist in May.

Bummer! Thanks for the information.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi DJ,

I believe that Gloria has been taking some kind of strontium. I think she's researched it pretty heavily. Maybe it's the strontium of citrate but I can't remember. She posted good results from her bone density scan I want to say in the last 3 to 4 months. If you search for strontium I believe you'll find your post.

Where is Gloria by the way?

Hi Brandy, I heard about strontium citrate through Gloria. She has been on it for a while and is showing improved bond density. When I heard of her results, I bought strontium but waited for more information. Based on the recent findings of prescription strontium, I don't plan on using my OTC form.
I have not seen Gloria on the Board in quite a while. I hope she is doing well.
