Yes, the evidence for the role of sugar in heart disease is mounting. Terri, did you know that folks who drink even one sugary soft drink a week have a higher risk of heart disease? Good thing you have been working on eliminating that Pepsi. Keep up the good work!
I think a major problem is the omega 3 to omega 6 fat ratio in our diets. Our paleo ancestors ate foods in a one to one ratio. However, most Americans eat way too much oil, which is the main source of omega 6 fats (soy, safflower, sunflower, corn, etc.) and very little food with omega 3 fats. Almost all snack foods have omega 6 oils. I recently read about omega 7 oil, which is healthful and occurs mainly in macadamia nuts and anchovies. Leah, do you have thoughts on this?

Monique!! Hello! Yes, wish I could say "what is sugar" lol. I'm just praying I'm not diabetic yet...still no word on my blood results..but if I am I know who to talk to girl! I know you still eat rice and corn products right? I've missed a lot of people on here lately...hard to believe I joined over a year and a half ago I believe...I'm do extremely well...when I cheat with the fiber or overindulge in the grains, I'll get the bloating but that has been about it. D is a thing of the past...just like you. Still taking that Amitriptyline? My miracle drug...haha. Hope you are doing well!
Tex, well I'm so eating my hard boiled egg for breakfast...doctor tells me to only eat the egg whites but that's no fun!! I only eat lean beef but doctor says no more than 3 times a week.
Polly, thanks for the Omega 3, Omega 6 information. I didn't realize that about the oils...I binge on corn chips with sunflower oil....gonna have to cut down on that (sigh). What about olive oil? I eat tons of that! I don't react to soy but do stay away from it for the most part. Oh...well you've totally scared me off of Pepsi...I have two left and I'm not touching them or buying anymore either...started out buying for a get-together I had and that's when I started up the soda again. Fortunately I can get off sodas pretty easily..it's the snacks I have problems with. So hard to do especially if you want to keep weight on...I love my weight right now..look good and don't want to lose again.
Thank you all for your input.

Terri,
Olive oil is a good oil! You might be able to find some potato chips cooked in olive oil - probably in a health food store. One of the "kettle" chips uses canola oil (which has a good ratio) but I can't remember which brand. Coconut oil (even though a saturated fat) is thought to be healthy.
The worst offender is soy oil - primarily because it is used in so many processed foods. A study showed that 20% of the calories in the American diet come from soy oil. But corn oil is second, I believe.
Although our ancestors ate a ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 of 1:1, the current American ratio is 15:1 up to 50:1! Quite a difference!
HAHAHA about scaring you away from Pepsi. I used to drink Virgil's root beer, which has none of my sensitivities, and lots of juice. After my a1c test (blood sugar measured over several mo.) came back elevated, I cut both out. For the "soda" urge, I now add slices of fruit (or berries) to chilled seltzer water.

Thanks Polly! Learning a lot from you today! I will look for those chips....so bad with the chips. I'm now thinking that the fries I eat at Red Robin twice a month are fried in soybean oil...gonna ask next time I go. I will also check out Omega 7 if I can tolerate it in pill form.
Oh yes, I was a big time juice drinker just like you...I still have a half cup of low acid OJ a day. My A1C when elevated is 5.8 but doctor doesn't like it that high...says that's pre-diabeties. I will have to try seltzer water....can't believe I've never had that. I think I like my sodas so much cause of all the sugar. BTW...my good cholesterol is always around 70 but LDL goes up as well which isn't good but good cholesterol is so high that doctor says I needn't worry. I hope it's the same this time! I'm figuring my LDL is up more because of ...like you mentioned...all the nasty oils I consume, but HDL will still be high..probably from all the avocados I eat...can't contribute it to anything else other than maybe the fish I eat twice a week. Oh and the olive oil I suppose. But now I think I know what the culprit is when it comes to my LDL being a little over 130. I also read that sugar can increase LDL as well along with Triglycerides...those are always a little high for me. I will work this out just like I did my MC! Somehow...some way!

Speaking of changing tastes: I learned to drink Coke when I was growing up back in the 1950s. Back then it came in 6 oz glass bottles, made with cane sugar, and it was awesome. Over the decades I stuck with it, and by the time my symptoms started (about 15–20 years ago), I was drinking 5 or 6 a day, every day, and of course it was mostly sold in 12 oz cans, by then. I'm sure that it played a huge role in the development of increased intestinal permeability and set the stage for the eventual onset of my symptoms.
But anyway, my point here is that when I finally figured out what was causing all my digestive problems, and started a very restrictive diet, part of the program was avoiding all sources of corn, including HFCS, and most sugar, of course. The only beverages I was able to drink without problems for a couple of years, were water, unsweetened tea, and (like Polly, and on her suggestion), Virgil's Root Beer.
After I was able to begin adding a few things back into my diet, I found that I could tolerate corn, so I tried a Coke. I couldn't believe that it tasted so bad. It was waaaaaaaay too sweet, and nothing about it appealed to me. For a while, I drank a Dr. Pepper each morning, made with the original formula (using cane sugar), mostly for the caffeine. Prior to about a year ago, I had never developed the coffee habit, so a caffeinated soft drink was my morning "coffee" These days though, I just drink a couple of cups of coffee to get the caffeine, and the sugary soft drinks no longer appeal to me.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Oh how our taste buds change
Hello Friends,
I'll put everyone of you to shame by saying that I HAVEN'T HAD A COKE IN 40 YEARS! I'll add that I think that I never drank more than 10 cokes in my entire life
How's that for a record? (Hey, I'm weird)

WOW, Monique! You deserve some kind of award. In fact, that could well be an American record!
Tex, I hear you about those original 6 oz. Cokes. They were the best - not too sweet with an almost "peppery" taste. Loved 'em. When we were kids, we were allowed to have one once a week at the most - it was a special treat for Sat. night if you did all of your chores.

I'll raise the weirdness quotient a bit higher and add that I haven't had a hamburger in 35 years! and get this: I HAVE ONLY BEEN TO MCDONALDS 3 TIMES IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
One was in Paris, one in the south of Spain and one in CA when we were driving and couldn't find any other place to eat.
If there was a food abstinence Olympics, I'd win!

Good grief Monique...that's quite amazing! I love my hamburgers!
Tex, that is a lot of soda...I used to drink it before I got sick with this disease but only like one a day. I'm also sure that my over consumption of sugary sweets (my binges) did contribute to my disease as well along with gluten of course. I went without a soda for a year and just started back up in October...my first drink after that whole year was quite different from yours...wishing it had been more like yours...but it was so good I thought I was in heaven...lol! Too bad it wasn't disgusting like my cow's milk was...would make things a whole lot easier. I've been caffeine free for a few years with the exception of my candy bars I get on special occasion...like , yes on Valentine's day and, yes, they are in my pantry torturing me. But it's all dark chocolate so I 'll just eat a square...uh..but who can stop at a square..lol! As for coffee, well I'll gag on that so my tiny bit of OJ in the morning is the only thing that gets me going. Barely.
BTW...I remember bottled Colas back in the 70's when I was a kiddo..but Mom wouldn't let us have many.

No soda in my house growing up and I don't drink soda now, although there were certainly years when I did, but it was never a daily habit. I eat a low carb diet, following Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. I avoid all fast acting carbs which means not only sugar but grains and fruits as well, except for a few blueberries.
